Football opens conference play with blowout win at SBU

BOLIVAR, Mo. – In its first Great Lakes Valley Conference game of the season, the UIndy football team (2-1, 1-1 GLVC) engineered a lopsided 48-14 victory at Southwest Baptist (1-2, 1-2) Saturday night.  The Greyhounds (2-1, 1-1 GLVC) amassed a season-high 477 total yards while getting 100-yard-rushing games from both Matt Ripp and Andrew Walker.

Despite coming into the week ranked second in Division II in passing offense, the Bearcats (1-2, 1-2) were limited to just 157 yards through the air.  Southwest Baptist, who is a new associate member of the GLVC this season, came into the game averaging 435 passing yards per game.

SBU quarterback and defending GLVC Offensive Player of the Week Willie Tindal was under pressure all night, as the Hounds racked-up three sacks, part of a season-high six tackles for a loss.

Meanwhile, Ripp (102 rushing yds) and Walker (117), who both scored two touchdowns, became the first pair of Greyhounds to gain more than 100 yards rushing in the same game since Ripp and Klay Fiechter turned the trick versus Saint Joseph's back on Oct. 6, 2012.

UIndy scored the game's first 13 points.  Sandwiched between two short field goals from senior Scott Miller, Walker broke off a 39-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter – a career long rush for the sophomore running back.

SBU got on the board with a 13-yard TD midway through the second.  The drive was fueled by three costly UIndy penalties totaling 30 yards.

UIndy got the seven points back before the half, as junior QB Connor Barthel found senior WR Logan Young for a 28-yard touchdown connection.  The score was set up by a 39-yard punt return by Reece Horn, who spent his first career game in the role of returner.

The Hounds delivered a game-changing blow late in the half with back-to-back great plays.  With SBU knocking on the door and under a minute to play in the half, senior Koby Orris intercepted Tindal at the UIndy five-yard line and returned the ball 30 yards.  On the very next play from scrimmage, Barthel and Horn connected on a 65-yard TD pass to open up a 27-7 advantage heading into the locker room.  The lengthy catch-and-run marked the longest offensive play for UIndy on the young season.

UIndy kept the pedal down out the break.  After the defense forced a three-and-out to start the third, the Greyhound offense orchestrated another touchdown drive.  UIndy drove 65 yards in seven plays, capped by a 21-yard rush by Ripp.

Later trailing by 34 points, the Bearcats found a little life by forcing and recovering a UIndy fumble at their own 29-yard line.  A 27-yard reception and back-to-back big runs followed, putting the home team in the red zone for just the second time all night.

SBU eventually cashed in with a three-yard TD reception from Marc Strickland.  One play earlier, Strickland converted a 4th & 6 situation to keep the drive alive.

That would be the final points scored by the Bearcats, however.  UIndy added its sixth and final touchdown with a four-yard plunge from Ripp before taking the starters out in the fourth quarter.

Rob Dury's 13 total tackles led all players, while Derrick Bryant, Dillon Dallas and Evan Crouch each recorded a sack.

Horn scored two TDs and finished with 180 all-purpose yards, including 120 receiving.  Barthel finished 14-for-20 passing for 208 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.

After starting the year with three consecutive road games, the Hounds finally power up the lights at Key Stadium for their home opener next week.  UIndy welcomes in-region Hillsdale for a 6 p.m. kickoff Saturday, Sep. 27.
