INDIANAPOLIS - The UIndy volleyball squad stretched its winning streak over Saint Joseph's to a remarkable 25 matches in a row Tuesday night in a 3-0 rout (25-16, 25-10, 25-18).
Saint Joseph's hasn't defeated the Hounds since Nov. 4, 2000, losing 17 of the 25 by way of 3-0 sweep. The Greyhounds domination over the Pumas has seen them take 75 of 83 sets played during the streak.
Tuesday night's victory was also the seventh sweep of the season for UIndy.
The Greyhounds sprinted out of the gate, taking leads of 9-1, 14-2, and 18-4 en route to the 25-16 set-one victory. UIndy out-hit SJC .344 to .111 in the first set, finishing with 10 more kills (17-7) as well.
It was much of the same in the second set, a 25-10 blowout in favor of the Crimson and Grey. Again the Hounds hit at a high rate, totaling 15 kills with two errors on 36 swings (.361).
The third a final set was a much closer affair as the Pumas fought remain alive. UIndy hit just .088 as a team, but outlasted a stingy SJC squad for a 25-18 match-clinching win.
Hailey Brown (14) and
Lynsey Hazelwood (12) each finished with double-digit kills while hitting over .300.
Becca Lira tallied eight kills and an error on 12 swings, leading UIndy with a .583 attack percentage.
Meghan Binkerd helped the Greyhounds run an efficient attack, totaling 34 assists in the win. The senior out of Wabash, Ind., is just 13 assists away from breaking Beth Robbins' (2005-2008) record for most assists all-time in program history.
Kimberly Trojan finished Tuesday's match with 11 digs from the libero position.
The Hounds continue their homestand this weekend with matches against McKendree Friday at 7 p.m. and Illinois Springfield Saturday at 3 p.m.
Note: The last time Saint Joseph's defeated UIndy in volleyball (Nov. 4, 2000) gas was $1.52, Creed's "With Arms Wide Open" topped the Billboard charts, and Greyhound coach Jason Reed was a senior in high school.
