INDIANAPOLIS – Behind a 100-yard rushing game from
Andrew Walker and a career milestone from senior
Reece Horn, the UIndy football team held off a pesky Quincy team Saturday night at Key Stadium, downing the visiting Hawks, 26-20.
Â
Walker compiled a game-high 107 yards on the ground, including a three-yard touchdown in the second quarter. More significantly, Horn, who had six catches for 72 yards, became just the second-ever Greyhound to surpass 3,000 career receiving yards.
Â
The Greyhounds (6-1, 4-0) instigated a pair of first-half turnovers by the Hawks to help build the lead. After the teams traded scores on the first two drives of the game, the Hounds forced a fumble on back-to-back Quincy possessions, recovering both of them in the red zone.
Â
UIndy cashed in on both occasions, scoring touchdowns shortly after each Quincy miscue. Quarterback
Connor Barthel found h-back
Alex Kimack over the middle for a 14-yard hook-up, followed by Walker's goal-line blast three-and-a-half minutes later.
Â
The deficit peaked after
Tuwan Payton finished off a marathon seven-play, 90-yard drive with a two-yard score with 6:50 to go in the half.
Â
The Greyhounds would manage just three points the rest of the way, however. The Hawks eventually made it a one-possession game late in the fourth but never got the ball back from that point.
Â
Quincy cut into the lead just before half by scoring a touchdown on a 4th & Goal play in the final seconds to make it 23-14.
Â
UIndy's first two drives after the break went for 78 and 67 yards, respectively, but the team's first lost fumble of the year and a failed 1st-&-Goal situation helped hold the Hounds to just three points in the entire second half.
Â
Later, a muffed fair catch on a Quincy punt led to six points for the visitors. The Hawks crept to within a single score when QB Nick Lonergan found De'Carlos Poole for a nine-yard TD. Though senior
Lee Campbell blocked the ensuing PAT, Quincy found itself down just 26-20 with just 4:38 remaining.
Â
As desperately as the Hawks needed the ball back, they could not stop the Hounds down the stretch as UIndy picked up three first downs in the waning minutes to ice it. Walker notched a pair himself with runs of 12 and 17 yards. Horn, meanwhile, secured a 12-yard grab in the final series to put him over the 3,000-yard mark for his career.
Â
Defensively, the Greyhounds held their guests to a season-low 237 total yards. Junior linebacker
Rob Dury led all players with 12 tackles, followed by
Aeneas White with 10. Campbell and O'Rion Elder each had 1.5 sacks and a QB hurry.
Â
UIndy faces its longest two road trips of the season in the next two weeks, starting with a trek to Lincoln on Saturday, Oct. 24.
Â
NOTES
Kicker
Brad Schickel connected on both FG attempts on the night – a 20- and a 17-yarder … Horn's former teammate Mar'Quone Edmonds (2009-12) is the only other Greyhound to reach the 3,000-yard plateau as he finished his decorated career with 3,254 receiving yards.
