game notesON TAPTeams on opposite ends of the GLVC standings square off this week, as the first-place Greyhounds travel to Lincoln University Saturday to face the Blue Tigers.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN... AND AGAINThis week brings the first of back-to-back road games for the Greyhounds. Located in Jefferson City, Mo., Lincoln is approximately 370 miles from UIndy, while next weekend's opponent, William Jewell, is nearly 500 miles from campus. The two road trips are easily the longest of the season for the Hounds.
KEEP IT ROLLINGThe Greyhounds are riding a five-game winning streak heading into the weekend. UIndy has now had a winning streak of at least five games in each of the last five seasons. The school record for consecutive wins is 10, set by the 2012 team.
ABOUT LINCOLNAs the only winless team in GLVC play, the Blue Tigers enter the week with an 0-4 conference mark. They are 1-6 overall, with their lone win coming in a 35-32 final versus NAIA Langston in the season opener.
Senior linebacker Kareem Joyner has racked up 12.0 tackles per game, good for second in the GLVC and 13th in Division II. The 6-2, 230-pound Chicago native also has two interceptions, a pair of forced fumbles, two blocked field goals and a team-high 6.5 tackles for a loss to his credit.
Offensively, Lincoln spreads the ball around in the passing game as three Tigers rank in the top seven in the league in receptions per game. The junior trio of Delvon Rouser, Bryson Winfrey and Darius Hicks all average between 5.0 and 5.4 catches per contest.
The Blue Tigers are guided by fifth-year head coach Mike Jones. A 12-year veteran of the NFL, the former linebacker played with three teams at sport's highest level. He is best known for making one of the most famous tackles in NFL history, as his goal-line stop of Tennessee's Kevin Dyson on the final play of Super Bowl XXXIV – dubbed "The Tackle" – ensured the St. Louis Rams a 23-16 victory.
Along with Southwest Baptist, Lincoln is an associate member of the GLVC, competing in football only. Both teams migrated from the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) as part of a Strategic Conference Football Scheduling Alliance between the GLVC and the MIAA starting prior to the 2014 season. Though each school remains full active members of the MIAA in all other sports, the four-year agreement has provided scheduling stability and non-conference flexibility for both conferences in the sport of football.
HOUNDS vs. BLUE TIGERSUIndy has won both previous meetings with Lincoln. Back in 1983, the two clashed for the first time, with UIndy earning a 40-19 win at home. Flash forward to last season, UIndy again defeated LU at home, again in convincing fashion with a
52-14 decision on Homecoming.
The Greyhounds racked up a season-high 262 rushing yards that evening, with
Matt Ripp going for 122 yards and
Andrew Walker amassing 74. UIndy scored seven touchdowns on the day, with Walker, who finished with one rushing touchdown and one receiving, being the only player to account for more than one score.
Meanwhile, quarterback
Connor Barthel had nearly as many incompletions as touchdown passes, finishing 23-for-28 passing for 255 yards and four TDs.
LAST TIME OUTUIndy maintained its hold on first place in the conference with a
26-20 home win versus Quincy last week. The Greyhounds built a 23-7 lead in the second quarter and held off a late charge by the visiting Hawks to seal the win.
Walker notched his third 100-yard game of the season with 107 rushing yards and a touchdown.
Rob Dury (11) and
Aeneas White (10) each finished with double-digit tackle totals, while
Lee Campbell and
O'rion Elder both added 1.5 sacks.
BLOCK PARTYThe Greyhound special teams unit came up with its third blocked kick of the season last week when senior
Lee Campbell crashed through the line to bat down a fourth-quarter extra point attempt by Quincy. It marked the first PAT block for the Hounds since
Tommy Taylor got a piece of one last year, also versus Quincy.
Earlier this season, UIndy had back-to-back games with a blocked field goal. Campbell swatted a 46-yard try at Hillsdale, while
Korey Rogan blocked a 29 yarder versus Southwest Baptist.
TURN, TURN, TURNDespite enduring its first three-turnover game of the season last Saturday, UIndy is still tied for first in Division II in fewest turnovers committed. The Greyhounds have just four giveaways on the season (two interceptions, two lost fumbles), joining five other teams at the top of the list. Fellow-GLVC-member McKendree is tied for seventh in D-II with only five turnovers to date.
REECE'S RECORD-BOOK CLIMBWith senior
Reece Horn marching towards a historic season, it is time once again for your weekly check-in of the Carmel, Ind., native's statistical progress. Last week, Horn became just the second Greyhound to reach 3,000 career receiving yards after compiling six grabs for 72 yards versus Quincy. He enters the weekend second among all active Division II receivers in career yards and needs just 246 yards to set a new UIndy mark.
ACTIVE D-II CAREER REC YARDS LEADERSRK | PLAYER, SCHOOL | YDS |
1. | Jere Brown , Merrimack | 3,032 |
2. | Reece Horn, UIndy | 3,009 |
3. | Adam Jiskra, Minn. St. Moorhead | 2,925 |
4. | Justin Houston, Tusculum | 2,873 |
5. | Jon Schnaars, East Stroudsburg | 2,886 |
UINDY CAREER REC YARDS LEADERSRK | PLAYER, YEARS | YDS |

4. | Gary Isza, 1995-98 | 2,489 |
5. | Craig Cothron, 1995-98 | 2,451 |
In addition, Horn ranks first in the GLVC and third in the nation in receiving yards on the season (843). A big performance at Lincoln would make him the first-ever Greyhound with two 1,000-yard receiving seasons.
INDY 500Horn wasn't the only Greyhound to reach a milestone last week. QB
Connor Barthel surpassed the 500-completion mark for his career, joining just four other Greyhounds to reach the plateau. With just 46 yards Saturday, the Indianapolis native will amass 6,000 passing yards for his career.
AT A LOSSStill with four games remaining on the regular-season slate, senior
Lee Campbell has already racked up 12.5 tackles for a loss this year. That total represents the most for a Greyhound defender since Chris White's 13.5 TFLs in 2005. Campbell is currently sixth all-time at UIndy in TFLs.
POLL POSITIONWith a five-game winning streak in hand, UIndy is inching back into the national consciousness. After being ranked No. 23 in the AFCA Division II Coaches Poll after week one, the Hounds' loss to crosstown Marian knocked them out of the poll. UIndy has gone undefeated since and is slowly picking up support among national voters. The Hounds garnered 37 points in this
latest coaches poll, good for the 27th-highest total on the list.
More significantly, the Hounds are hoping to appear in the top seven in the first official Super Region 4 rankings, which will be released Monday, Oct. 26.
