LIBERY, Mo. – The 20th-ranked UIndy football team (8-1, 6-0 GLVC) had an eventful Halloween afternoon Saturday, clinching a share of its fourth straight GLVC title in a 63-35 win at William Jewell. Along with attaining its highest point total in 87 years, a number of individual program records were matched or broken, highlighted by senior
Reece Horn becoming the school's career leader in receiving yards.
In fact, Horn snapped a pair of UIndy records on the day, both previously held by former-teammate and All-American Mar'Quone Edmonds (2009-12). A graduate of local Cathedral High School, Horn not only upped his career receiving-yard total to the record-breaking sum of 3,266, but he also finished with 17 catches on the day, good for both a new UIndy and GLVC single-game mark.
In addition, Horn went over 1,000 yards for the year to become the first-ever Greyhound with two 1,000-yard receiving seasons.
For all his efforts in the pass game, Horn did not find the end zone. He left that to his running backs as
Andrew Walker and
Tuwan Payton combined for eight touchdowns. Walker, who racked up four rushing touchdowns last week on the way to GLVC Offensive Player of the Week honors, finished with five scores Saturday, matching Kenny Gillum's UIndy-record total set in a 1986 contest versus Valpo.
UIndy's point total was good was the second highest in school history, second only to the ridiculous 97 points hung on Oakland City way back in 1928. The Hounds punted just three times all day, including only once in the first three quarters.
The final verdict also avenges the Hounds' 27-24 home loss to Jewell in last year's season finale, still the only GLVC loss for UIndy since the conference began sponsoring football in 2012.
It took all of 75 seconds for the Hounds to get on the board. UIndy covered 77 yards in just five plays in the game-opening drive, highlighted by a 51-yard catch-and-run by
Malik Higgins and a one-yard touchdown rush by Walker.
After the Cardinals (3-6, 3-4) answered with a quick touchdown strike, UIndy retook the lead – ultimately for good – on a 10-yd touchdown reception by
Alex Kimack, his second TD of the season. Horn had three catches for 29 yards on the drive, while freshman
Shakir Paschall broke free for a 38-yard rush to set up the score.
UIndy nearly scored a third TD in the first stanza, earning a 1st-&-Goal situation before the end of the first period. The Hounds punched it in two plays into the second with another one-yard TD by Walker.
Now leading 21-7, the UIndy defense forced a Jewell punt out of its own end zone to again give the Hounds good field position. This time Payton went to work, escorting the ball 37 yards on just two carries – capped by a 13-yard TD rush – to put the Hounds up 28-7 less than a minute into the second quarter.
The teams would combine for four more touchdowns before the half was up as UIndy took a 42-21 lead into the locker room. Walker and Payton each added another TD before the break.
The Cardinals scored on the first possession of the third quarter to make it a two-touchdown game, but that would be as close as they would get. UIndy responded with an eight-play, 75-yard drive (and another Walker TD) to pull away.
The UIndy defense came up with a big 4th-down stop on the ensuing Jewell drive, and the offense delivered another score to all but put the Cardinals away.
Walker's fifth and final TD came early in the fourth to finally cap the Greyhound scoring. The Chicago product hit the century mark for the third straight game, finishing with 101 rushing yards. Payton just missed his first career 100-yard output with 94 yards on the ground to go with his three TDs and 102 kickoff return yards
Connor Barthel also had a great day statistically. The senior quarterback completed an amazing 26 of his 28 passes (.929) for a career-best 367 yards. Paschall added 66 yards on six totes, while Higgins finished with 80 yards on just three catches.
Defensively,
Derrick Bryant,
Rob Dury and
Korey Rogan all garnered a team-high seven tackles. Rogan also collected his first career interception, picking off Jewell QB Nick West in the end zone and returning it 89 yards to set up Greyhounds TD.
Coming off wins on its two longest road trips of the season, UIndy returns home next weekend for a Senior Night match-up with Missouri S&T Saturday, Nov. 7. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
NOTES
The Greyhounds have won the GLVC each season since the conference began sponsoring football in 2012. The Hounds will need one more win to clinch a fourth straight outright championship.
