LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Indianapolis men's soccer team made it two wins in a row on Sunday afternoon, getting a goal late in the first half and making it stand in a 1-0 win over Bellarmine University.
GAME CHANGERThe game's lone goal came in the 33rd minute when junior
Jacob Meyer gathered in a pass that bounced off a Bellarmine defender and fired it into the back of the net for his fourth goal of the year and third in the last two matches.
BEYOND THE BOX SCOREUIndy just missed out on adding two more goals in the opening half. In the eighth minute,
Benjamin Sierra ripped a shot from long range that hit the right post and Meyer just missed a wide open cage on the rebound. Meyer also caught iron in the 16th minute, hitting the crossbar with a shot from just outside the box.
Zak Mitiche pounced on the rebound but his put back attempt was answered by Zach Pogue.
Casey Zimmerman just missed out on adding an insurance marker in the 68th minute, ringing yet another shot off the crossbar.
Shots were 11-8 in favor of the Greyhounds. Both teams finished with two shots on goal.
Christopher Jones earned his sixth shutout of the year, moving within one clean sheet of the program's single-season record.
COACHES' CORNERHead Coach John Higgins: "We had some really good chances in the first half and maybe should have had another goal or two but it was great to get that one. In the second half we kind of tensed up and let them control the possession, but they weren't able to get any really good scoring chances."
"Our back four and Chris (Jones) have been great this year. They really gave us a chance to win today and we've done that all year long. If the defense continues to play the way they have, we're going to have a good chance to win a lot more this year."
"Jake (Meyer) has been a great leader for us this year and right now he looks really sharp out there. He was dangerous all weekend and he really took off this weekend. It was good to get him going this weekend and that's big because he's our most experienced striker on the team."
UP NEXTThe Greyhounds will be back on their home turf for the next two games, the first coming on Friday night against Illinois Springfield. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
