MIDLAND, Mich. – Playing their fifth game in eight days, the UIndy women's basketball came up short in a hard-fought 69-60 loss at Northwood University Saturday afternoon.
The Greyhounds (0-5) committed 21 turnovers that led to 22 points for the Timberwolves (2-1), providing NU with the advantage it needed in a regional contest that was close from wire to wire.
UIndy raced out to an early lead after the opening tip, grabbing a 12-5 edge just minutes into the game and forcing an early timeout from Northwood. The T'Wolves settled in, and drew within 18-16 by the end of the first period.
A 10-0 run in the second quarter saw the T'Wolves grab their first lead of the game, and as halftime loomed the two squads traded punches and leads, eventually heading into the locker rooms all square at 33-33.
Senior
Princess German led all scorers with 16 points on 6 for 9 shooting at the break, while junior
Nicole Anderson and sophomore
Ashley Montanez paced the Hounds with five rebounds apiece.
The third quarter was a true "game of runs," the first being a 9-0 spurt right out of the half by NU. The Greyhounds responded with an 11-2 charge of their own, the bulk of which came from Anderson, who went a perfect 4 for 4 and converted a traditional 3-point play during the stretch.
Northwood again grabbed a sizeable lead in the fourth quarter, however, and shortly after the media timeout held a 61-53 advantage over the Hounds. A three from sophomore
Sarah Costello followed by another bucket from Anderson soon after got the Hounds within three – 63-60 – but it was as close as they would get. The T'Wolves closed out the game by knocking down six of their final eight free throws.
Anderson recorded her first double-double of the season and fourth as a Greyhound behind a 16-point, 11-rebound performance.
German led all scorers with 23 points, already her third 20-point output of the young season, finishing 9 for 14 from the field while sinking a trio of 3-pointers.
The Greyhounds finished with better field goal (.436) and 3-point field goal (.375) percentages than their hosts, but the 21 turnovers proved costly in the end. Northwood also had 26 more free throw attempts than UIndy, finishing with a +18 point advantage from foul shots alone.
UIndy has a brief respite before hosting Ashland University Tuesday, Nov. 24, at 6 p.m. ET in Nicoson Hall. It will be the sixth regional game for the Hounds and fifth against GLIAC competition.
