Despite German's 25, Hounds fall to Sycamores in opening exhibition

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Despite a game-high 25 points from senior guard Princess German, the Indianapolis women's basketball team dropped their season-opening exhibition to in-state Division I-foe Indiana State, 74-44.

Turnovers were the story for much of Friday night at the Hulman Center. Four early giveaways by the Greyhounds resulted in six fast-break points for the Sycamores. Indiana State jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead before German knocked down a pair of free throws to get Indianapolis on the board.

UIndy would finish the night with 31 turnovers, translating to 30 points for the Sycamores.

"It's a learning curve, obviously," said head coach Constantine Popa afterwards. "We have to take care of the basketball, but I thought we did some things well tonight. We need to learn from the mistakes tonight, watch the film and get better."

Right as it appeared Indiana State was going to run away with things in the opening quarter – women's college basketball has moved to four, 10 minute quarters rather than the traditional 20-minute halves – German provided a much-needed offensive spark. The team's leading scorer from last year connected on back-to-back triples, and then found sophomore Ashley Montanez for a foul-line jumper to bring the Hounds within five at 15-10.

However, it would be all Sycamores from there, as Indiana State would go on a 29-10 run to close out the first half.

Eight different Sycamores tallied points in the opening half, paced by Cierra Ceazer with 12 on 5-of-7 shooting.

German led all scorers with 14 first-half points. She shot just 3-of-9 from the field, but converted on all six of her free throw attempts while also draining a pair of threes. A 70 percent foul shooter last year, the senior out of Gary, Ind., finished an outstanding 11-of-12 from the charity stripe.

"I thought she had a really good game," said Popa of German's performance, "For us, we need to find other people to get involved, find that second and third scoring option."

Popa's club came out of halftime and opened with a 7-2 run to start the third quarter. After a German layup, senior Marlena Muszak hit a jumper from inside the 3-point arc, and sophomore Tina Negoescu followed with a transition three from the corner to cut the lead under 20 at 46-27.

That would be as close as the Hounds would get.

Triples on consecutive positions from Ashley Taia and Jennifer Mackowiak quickly pushed the Sycamore lead back up to 25, their largest to that point.

Behind German, the next leading scorer for the Hounds was Negoscu with five on 2-of-4 shooting.

Indianapolis finished the night shooting 14-of-38 (.368) from the field and 4-of-14 (.286) from behind the arc. The Greyhounds forced Indiana State into just 39-percent shooting (26-of-65) from the field and 30 percent (6-of-20) from 3-point range.

It's a quick turnaround for UIndy as they'll head to Champaign, Ill., for a clash with the Big Ten's Fighting Illini tomorrow. Tip-off from the State Farm Center is set for 2 p.m. EST.
