INDIANAPOLIS – Led by a strong performance from the trio of
Princess German,
Nicole Anderson and
Sarah Costello, the University of Indianapolis women's basketball team earned their first home win of the season with a 72-58 win over Tiffin University on Thursday night.
Â
German had 17 points in the first half on her way to a game-high 27 on the night. German also set a new career high with 11 field goals made. Anderson picked up her second double-double of the year, pouring in 21 points and ripping down 14 rebounds, a new career high. Costello added 13 points for the Hounds and helped spark the Greyhound run that helped them pull away, knocking down a trio of three-pointers in the second quarter.
Â
The Hounds (2-9) shot a season-high 50.9 percent from the floor, knocking down 29 of 57 field goal attempts. At the other end, the Hounds held Tiffin (2-7) to 33.9 percent shooting on the night and just 23.5 percent from long range.
Â
"We really took the long layoff we had and used that time to work on some things we hadn't been able to with so many games to open the year," Head coach
Constantin Popa said. "We really took advantage of that and it showed tonight. We were able to work on our transition game and our inside game and tonight it paid off with the way we were able to get some easy baskets. Defensively, I thought our communication and hustle was great tonight and that was a big reason we were able to get the win."

Both teams got off to a slow start on the offensive end, combining for just two field goals in the first five minutes of play. Down 14-11 with less than three minutes to go in the quarter, German put the Hounds in front for good with seven straight points to give UIndy an 18-14 lead after 10 minutes of play.
Â
The Hounds opened the second quarter with a 7-2 run and stretched their lead to double-figures right before the half when Costello knocked down her third triple of the second quarter to give the Greyhounds a 35-23 lead at the break. The UIndy defense stymied the Dragons' offensive attack in the first half, holding them to just 25 percent (8-for-32) shooting in the opening frame.
Â
A 7-0 UIndy run to start the second half extended the lead to 41-23 and put the game out of reach and after German beat the third quarter buzzer with a layup, the Hounds held a 58-38 lead going into the final frame. Tiffin outscored the Greyhounds 20-14 in the final quarter, but it proved to be too little, too late as the Hounds held on for the win.
Â
Rebounds were 35-34 in favor of UIndy with nine different Greyhounds recording at least one board. The Hounds' dominance down low was on display all night, with 46 points coming in the paint.
Â
Tiffin held a 17-15 edge in the turnover battle but the Hounds capitalized on Dragon mistakes all night, holding a 20-12 advantage in points off turnovers. UIndy capitalized on their transition chances, scoring 14 points on the fast break while holding the Dragons to none.
Â
The Greyhounds will step on the floor one more time before the holiday break, traveling to Columbus, Ohio on Saturday (Dec. 19) for a showdown with the Panthers of Ohio Dominican University. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m. from Alumni Hall.
