INDIANAPOLIS - The University of Indianapolis women's basketball team wrapped up their first weekend of GLVC play on Saturday afternoon, falling to No. 7 Lewis University, 67-51.
Princess German led the Hounds with 24 points and
Sarah Costello added 12 points for the Hounds, who fell to 1-9 on the year while Lewis improved to 8-1.
Â
The Flyers (8-1, 2-0 GLVC) dominated the game down low, outscoring the Hounds (1-9, 0-2 GLVC) 36-12 in the paint and holding a 41-21 advantage in the rebounding battle. Jessica Kelliher led all scorers with 26 points and grabbed 11 boards and Mariyah Brawner-Henley added 17 points and 12 boards down low for Lewis.
Â
"We knew we were going to have to battle hard in the lane and hold our ground," Head coach
Constantin Popa said after the game. "Their offense runs through their bigs and I thought we did a good job for stretches today. But we also had stretches where we didn't take advantage of the chances they were giving us and against a good team like Lewis, you have to capitalize when they give you chances. We're still learning. With four underclassmen seeing big minutes, there's going to be a learning curve. Right now, we have to stay positive and use this upcoming break to re-focus and be ready for the next one.
Â
Lewis opened the game with seven of the first nine points and stretched their lead up to 12-5 following a Kayla Brewer triple with 6:56 left in the opening quarter. A jumper from German preceded a triple from Costello to cut the Flyer lead down to one possession.
Â
After the two teams traded buckets their next two trips down the floor, the Flyers closed out the quarter with eight of the final 12 points to make it 24-20 after 10 minutes.
Â
Lewis opened the second quarter on a 6-2 run to take their largest lead of the day at 30-22, but UIndy answered with a 6-2 run of their own to close the gap back to four points at 32-28 with 3:59 left in the half. Lewis closed out the first half with an 8-0 run to take a 40-28 lead into the break.
Â
Facing a double-digit deficit to open the second half, the Greyhounds battled to get back within two possessions after a German three-pointer with 5:08 to play in the third made it 45-39 Flyers. The Greyhounds kept the game close over the next three minutes, but Flyers closed out the third quarter with six straight points to take a 55-43 lead into the fourth.
Â
The UIndy offense struggled mightily in the four quarter, going 2-for-14 from the floor over the final 10 minutes as the Flyers were able to put the game out of reach.
Â
The Hounds shot 39.1 percent (18-for-46) on the day and 33.3 percent (8-for-24) from long distance. At the other end, the Flyers connected on 44.2 percent (23-for-52) of their field goals, shooting 38.5 percent (5-for-13) from long range and 76.2 percent (16-for-21) from the line.
Â
Ashley Montanez led the Hounds with eight rebounds and Costello matched a finished with seven boards for the second straight game. Turnovers were 19-18 in favor of the Greyhounds with Lewis holding a 16-15 edge in points off giveaways.
Â
