* as of Feb. 18ON TAPSixth-ranked UIndy sets off on the biggest road trip of the season when it travels to Southern Indiana Thursday and No. 3 Bellarmine Saturday. This week's results could go a long way in determining NCAA regional seedings.
ABOUT SOUTHERN INDIANAUSI (17-6, 10-5) is riding a five-game winning streak, including a recent 4-0 swing through the GLVC West. Last Saturday, the Eagles escaped with a 64-62 win at Maryville, as the home Saints went scoreless for the final three minutes of play.
USI sits in the middle of the pack in most GLVC statistical categories. However, it ranks second in the league in offensive rebounding (12.8 orpg) and fifth in rebounding margin (+4.0).
Individually, the Eagles are led in scoring by senior guard Gavin Schumann. An All-GLVC Defensive Team honoree from last season, Schumann averages 18.0 points per game, good for fourth in the GLVC.
Junior George Edwards is the team's best rebounder (7.6 rpg) and senior TeNale Roland is the top playmaker (3.3 apg). Sophomore Bobo Drummond is second in the league in 3-pointers made per game (2.5).
The Eagles won their 12th GLVC title last season, defeating Bellarmine in the conference tournament final, 86-73. They have advanced to the GLVC conference finals each of the last four years.
GREYHOUNDS vs. EAGLESUSI owns a 53-20 (.726) advantage all-time versus the Greyhounds, including a commanding 31-4 (.886) edge in Evansville.
With that said, UIndy has won the last two head-to-head meetings by an average margin of 21 points. Last month, the Hounds handed the Eagles an
84-67 loss in Nicoson Hall.Â
Joe Lawson poured in 31 points on 12-of-14 shooting, while
Lucas Barker's 15 assists were (and still are) the most by a GLVC player this season.
UIndy head coach
Stan Gouard is 5-8 when coaching against his alma mater.
ABOUT BELLARMINERiding a league-high 10-game winning streak, the Knights (22-2, 14-1) held steady at No. 3 in the NABC poll. BU enters Thursday's game versus Saint Joseph's at the top of the conference in both field goal percentage (.527) and field goal percentage defense (.394). Those numbers are good for second and 11th in Division II, respectively.
Ironically, the Knights rank last in the GLVC in 3-pointers made per game (5.6) but third in the league in scoring offense (81.5 ppg).
Senior Jake Thelen leads the conference in rebounding (10.5) and ranks fifth in scoring (17.4). His 11 double-doubles are second only to UMSL's Aareon Smith (14) among GLVC players this season.
Senior Chris Whitehead was named the GLVC Player of the Week Monday, picking up the award for the second straight week. Coming off a 30-point performance at Missouri-St. Louis last Saturday, the 5-9 point guard is averaging 23.3 points and shooting 63 percent from the field in the last four games.
Whitehead, Thelen, UIndy's
Joe Lawson and Truman's Seth Jackson are the only two-time GLVC Player of the Week honorees this season.
GREYHOUNDS vs. KNIGHTSUIndy versus Bellarmine has become one of the biggest rivalries in college basketball in recent years. The two have met eight times since January of 2013, including a whooping four times last year.
Earlier this season, UIndy handed Bellarmine a
66-62 defeat in Nicoson Hall - its last loss. The Knights had two chances to tie or take the lead in the final minute, but the Hounds got the stops they needed to pull out their tightest win of the season. Lawson had 15 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks to lead four Greyhounds in double figures.
UIndy and Bellarmine have faced off in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in three of the past four seasons. Last March, the Hounds bounced the Knights from the Midwest Regional, 80-75, in the opening round.
Overall, Bellarmine is the second-most-frequent opponent for UIndy among current GLVC teams, as only Saint Joseph's (100 games) has faced the Hounds more often. Bellarmine holds a 50-44 (.532) edge in the all-time series.
LAST TIME OUTThe Greyhounds earned a big road win at Truman State last Saturday, knocking off the GLVC West's second-place squad,
83-64. UIndy held the Bulldogs, the second-highest scoring team in the conference, to 19 points below their average. Junior
Jordan Loyd compiled a game-high 22 points.
GLVC PICTUREAs things stand today, UIndy would need to win just one of its remaining three games to ensure a first-round bye in the upcoming
GLVC Tournament. The two division winners, along with teams with the next two best league records (regardless of division) will advance directly to the conference quarterfinals. Meanwhile, seeds 5-8 will host seeds 9-12 on campus sites Sunday, Mar. 1. The GLVC quarters, semis and final will be held at Family Arena in St. Charles, Mo., Mar. 5-8.
REGIONAL CONCERNSGLVC schools accounted for each of the top three spots in the season's initial Midwest Region rankings, as Bellarmine (1), Wisconsin-Parkside (2) and UIndy (2) monopolized the top of the poll. Â
The Greyhounds are looking to make a fifth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament and 10th overall. UIndy earned the No. 2 seed last season and went on the defeat Bellarmine in the first round before falling to Michigan Teach in the regional semifinal.
The top eight teams in each of the country's eight regions qualify for the NCAA Tournament. "Selection Sunday" comes Mar. 8 when the 64-team field will be announced on NCAA.com. The men's selection show is scheduled to start at 10:30 p.m., with first-round action starting Mar. 14 at the top seed's campus.

POLL POSITIONUIndy crept up one spot to No. 6 in this week's
NABC/Division II rankings. The Hounds have been in the top 10 for nine consecutive weeks, including a two-week stay at No. 1. Both Bellarmine (3rd) and Barry (4th) remain ahead of UIndy despite falling to the Hounds earlier this season.
20/20 VISIONUIndy's win at Quincy last Thursday ensured the program's 12th 20-win season, as well as its first-ever stretch of four consecutive 20-win campaigns.
