Women's basketball drops conference shootout to Maryville, 89-75

INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy women's basketball team fell 89-75 Saturday afternoon to the Maryville Saints, enduring the program's first four-game losing streak since the 2005-06 campaign.

The Saints (13-9, 7-6 GLVC) struggled mightily in a Thursday night loss at Saint Joseph's – scoring a season-low 37 points while shooting 27 percent – but had no troubles offensively Saturday. Maryville scored its 89 points on 29-for-60 shooting (48 percent) and had four individuals in double figures.

The Greyhounds (9-12, 6-7) were led by Princess German's 28 points, and finished 23-for-58 (39 percent) as a team.

The visiting Saints relied on the long ball early on, as four of their first five made buckets were 3-pointers, and they started just 1-for-5 from two-point territory.

The two squads traded lengthy runs in the middle of the first period. Maryville jumped out to its biggest lead of the half on a 12-0 run that made it 28-19. UIndy freshman Ashley Montanez helped stop the run by putting together an efficient sequence that included back-to-back buckets, a pair of steals and an offensive rebound.

Her four points sparked an 11-2 run that was capped by Princess German, who turned a steal and fastbreak layup into a conventional three-point play after converting a foul shot to draw the game even at 30-30.

Maryville scored 11 of the final 16 points of the half, going into the break up 41-35. The Greyhounds went just 2-for-10 from three-point land in the first period, but finished 9-for-15 on two-pointers. The Saints shot an even 50 percent (16-32) from the floor in the opening half.

The Saints – led by the program's all-time leading scorer Shelby Miller – controlled much of the second period and held off the Hounds the rest of the way. A 13-2 run several minutes in gave them a 64-46 lead, and they would lead by double figures the remainder of the contest.

Miller, who went just 2-for-14 Thursday night, tallied a season-high 29 points on 10-for-19 shooting from the field. She led Maryville to a 29-60 (48 percent) overall mark, including 8-of-21 from 3-point. The Saints also sank 23 of their 27 free throws.

German added four rebounds and three steals to her 28 points, and went 9-for-11 from the charity stripe. Senior Kelly Walter recorded 16 points, seven boards, a block and an assist, and freshman Sarah Costello finished with 12 points, three assists and two steals.

The Greyhounds shot 7-for-26 from 3-point range, dropping their long range shooting to 31 percent (32-102) over the last five games.

UIndy did force 17 Maryville turnovers – including 10 steals – that resulted in 19 points. The Saints' bench came through for 23 points, however, compared to the eight from Montanez, the only reserve that scored for UIndy.

The Hounds hit the road for a four-game swing, starting next Thursday at Quincy. Tip-off against the Hawks is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET.
