Greyhounds split GLVC opener with Rockhurst

WESTFIELD, Ind. – The Greyhound baseball team opened Great Lakes Valley Conference play with a doubleheader split against Rockhurst Saturday at Grand Park in Westfield, Ind.

Playing as the visiting squad, the Greyhounds (3-6, 1-1 GLVC) won the first game 8-1, but the Hawks (8-5, 1-1) took the closer 10-1.

GAME ONE: UIndy 8, RU 1

UIndy's Matthew Kaplanis (2-0) spun an eight-inning scoreless gem to lead the way in the opener, scattering five hits while fanning four Rockhurst batters. The junior righty had just one walk, and faced just six batters above the minimum.

Kaplanis had plenty of run support, as UIndy racked up eight runs on 14 hits.

The Hounds struck first in the top of the second inning when Daniel Lee brought in Zach Jacobs with a RBI groundout.

In the following inning the Greyhounds poured it on the Hawks, tallying four runs on six hits while chasing RU starter Zach Loeffelholz (0-3) in the process. Following RBI base knocks from Alex Ritchie and Brady Thomas, Sean McCracken smoked a two-run homer over the fence in left center.

In the bottom of fourth, RU had a two-out rally going before third baseman Storm Joop robbed Tim Mahoney of a RBI single by making a spectacular diving stop ranging to his left. He ended the frame by firing the ball across the diamond to beat Mahoney to first by half a step.

Shortstop Colin Hawk added to the Hounds' lead in the sixth, leading off the inning with a solo homerun – his second dinger of the season.

Zach Jacobs started the top of the eighth with a triple off the wall in centerfield, and Lee brought him home with a single into center to make it 7-0. Luke Andrade later hit a sharp single to left, plating Lee to bring the lead to 8-0.

Rockhurst scored once in the bottom of the ninth, but it wasn't nearly enough to keep the Greyhounds from winning the conference opener.

Trevor Forde, Ritchie, Jacobs, Lee and Andrade each recorded multiple hits in the win, and every Greyhound starter finished with at least one base knock.

GAME TWO: RU 10, UIndy 1 (7 inn.)
The Hawks returned the favor in Saturday's closer, hammering the Greyhounds 10-1.

Rockhurst hung a five-spot on UIndy in the bottom of the third, finishing the frame with five hits and one Greyhound error. UIndy starter Connor Mailloux was replaced by reliever Josh Witt, who was making his first appearance since coming back from Tommy John surgery.

In the bottom of the sixth the Hawks again totaled five runs on five hits. Pat Burns and Caleb Baker each talled two RBIs in the inning.

The Hawks' Michael Lydon-Lorson kept the Hounds' bats in check for much of the second game, limiting UIndy to just five hits and one run. Lydon-Lorson struck out six batters and walked none, facing four above the minimum.

UIndy made some noise in the top of the ninth, as Thomas and McCracken led off with back-to-back hits. Jacobs delivered a RBI groundout to make it 10-1, but the Lydon-Lorson closed out the seven-inning complete game.

Brady finished the game 1-for-3 with a run scored, and Jacobs was 1-for-3 with one RBI.

The Hounds and Hawks resume the series Saturday, with first pitch of the doubleheader set for 2:30 p.m. ET.
