WESTFIELD, Ind. – The UIndy baseball team finished its first Great Lakes Valley Conference series with an even 2-2 split against Rockhurst. The Greyhounds (4-7, 2-2 GLVC) fell in Sunday's opener 4-1 before rebounding with a 6-3 victory over the Hawks (9-6, 2-2) at Grand Park in Westfield, Ind.
GAME ONE: RU 4, UIndy 1 (7 inn.)In Sunday's opener the Hawks picked up where they left off in the closer last night, using effective pitching to keep the UIndy offense in check to win 4-1 in seven innings.
UIndy starter
Jordan Tackett (0-2) got into hot water in the bottom of the second when Rockhurst loaded the bases with just one out. The Hawks' centerfielder Nick Pascuzzi capitalized by hitting a two-run double deep into right field, putting RU on the board, and Calin McCourt followed with another base knock to make it 4-0.
The Hawks threatened again in the bottom of the fourth, filling up the bases to force UIndy to go to the bullpen. Freshman
Jake Sprinkle came on and struck out RU's Caleb Baker – who had been 2-for-2 – keeping the Hawks' lead at 4-0.
The Greyhounds finally got on the board in the top of the seventh inning.
Sean McCracken led off with a double off the left field fence, and was later brought in on a sharp RBI single by
Daniel Lee. Rockhurst starter Joe Huber (3-1) avoided further damage, however, capping off the complete-game win.
Huber limited the Hounds to seven hits and one run, and finished with five strikeouts.
Alex Ritchie led the Hounds going 2-for-3 from the plate, and
Daniel Lee was 1-for-3 with a RBI.
GAME TWO: UIndy 6, RU 3UIndy struck first in the top of the first, scoring an unearned run on Rockhurst starter Alex Marithew. After leading off with a single, Hawk came around to score on a throwing error by the shortstop to give the Hounds their first lead of the day, 1-0.
The Hawks answered in the bottom of the second, using a little bit of good fortune to tag UIndy's
Adam Cornwell (1-1) for one run. Cornwell fanned leadoff hitter Matt Stacks, but Stacks reached as the third strike skipped to the backstop. The following batter reached on an error, and the Hawks eventually manufactured the tying run on a RBI single from Dalton Thompson.
Down 2-1 entering the fifth, the Greyhounds scored four runs on five hits to reclaim the lead. UIndy got a run on a deep double from
Colin Hawk that scored
Blake Richardson, and Thomas later brought Hawk in with a RBI groundout. The big blast came from McCracken, who launched his second two-run homer of the series to make it 5-2.
UIndy added another in the following frame, as Richardson scored on a wild pitch after reaching base with a long double to left center.
The Hawks made noise in the bottom of the ninth, attempting a comeback win to finish the series. RU scored a run to make it 6-3, and brought the game-tying run to the plate with one out. But UIndy reliever
Brett Collins and the Greyhound defense escaped with the
Cornwell tossed 6.2 solid innings, allowing just six hits and two runs (one earned). The sophomore righty used an effective slider to help rack up nine strikeouts and just one walk.
Collins earned his second save of the season by virtue of entering the game with the tying run on deck. He went 2.1 innings, allowing just two hits while striking out three Rockhurst batters.
Hawk was the offensive catalyst in the series finale, going 2-for-5 with two runs and one RBI. Richardson went 2-for-4, recording his first multi-hit game as a Greyhound.
UIndy will take one day off before heading south to Owensboro, Ky., to face former GLVC-member Kentucky Wesleyan for a doubleheader Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET.
