Eighth-ranked Panthers too much for Greyhounds in GLVC quarterfinal

Box Score ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The UIndy women's basketball season came to a close Friday in an 80-65 loss to No. 8 and top-seeded Drury in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament quarterfinal.

A strong second half from the Panthers (24-3) helped deny the 8-seed Greyhounds' upset bid, as Drury scored 46 points on 15-for-30 shooting in the final period. UIndy (12-16) led at the half but couldn't keep up with the conference's top-seeded squad down the stretch.

The two squads traded punches in the opening half, neither able to jump ahead by more than four points.

Sophomore Nicole Anderson was the driving force for the Hounds early on, dropping 14 points on 5-for-7 shooting in the opening period after being limited to just six points in the teams' regular season meeting.
UIndy finished 6-for-15 from 3-point range in the first half, and held the Panthers to a single offensive rebound, taking a 36-34 advantage into the half.

After the break the Panthers tried to create space on the Greyhounds as the second period wore on, and took their biggest lead of game to that point after a conventional three-point play made it 55-48 midway through the half.

That sequence was part of a larger 17-4 Drury run that made it 67-52 with five minutes left. The Panthers went 7-for-8 over that stretch, while the Hounds were just 2-for-7 with four turnovers.

UIndy's resilience came through in a 8-2 spurt that pulled the Hounds within single digits with just minutes left, but the Panthers proved too much in the end.

Anderson led the Crimson and Grey with 22 points (9-11 shooting), nine rebounds and a pair of assists in the full 40 minutes of action. Senior Kelly Walter netted 14 in her final game as a Greyhound, hitting half of her six 3-point attempts to push her single-season record to 80 triples for the season.

Walter finishes her career as the 21st member of the program's 1,000-point club, totaling 1,016 across her four years at UIndy.

Junior Princess German added 11 points off of the bench, and senior Carly Lythjohan notched six points, seven boards, two assists and a steal.

Drury finished the game an even 50 percent (27-54) shooting, and went 19-of-22 on charity attempts to help seal the victory. The Panthers also had eight offensive rebounds in the second half, and turned 16 UIndy turnovers into 18 points.

All-GLVC first-teamer Sanayika Shields led the Panthers with 18 points and 11 rebounds.

Drury will face 4-seed Wisconsin-Parkside in Saturday's semifinal game.
