INDIANAPOLIS – UIndy baseball celebrated its Senior Day by clinching a series sweep over visiting Wisconsin-Parkside Sunday, winning by scores of 5-0 and 12-1 at Greyhound Park.
Prior to the doubleheader, seniors
Luke Andrade,
Brett Collins,
Zach Howard,
Zach Jacobs,
Daniel Lee,
Sean McCracken and
Josh Witt were honored along with senior athletic trainer Brandon Kleckner.
GAME ONE: UIndy 5, UWP 0 (7 inn.)A newcomer stole the spotlight in the Greyhounds' 5-0 victory following the senior's ceremony. Freshman
Jake Sprinkle (7-1) threw his second straight complete-game shutout, scattering five hits across seven innings of work. He struck out three batters and walked none, facing only five above the minimum while picking up his third consecutive winning decision.
UIndy (28-17, 22-10 GLVC) got on the board early when
Anthony Asalon scored on McCracken's sacrifice fly. Andrade drove in
Colin Hawk later in the fourth inning, giving the Greyhounds a 2-0 lead.
McCracken came through again in the fifth for the home team. After Asalon and
Brady Thomas executed a perfect hit-and-run, McCracken brought both home with a deep double to right center. He later scored on a passed ball to make it 5-0.
UIndy's clean-up batter led the way with three RBIs, and Thomas and Hawk each tallied multiple hits.
The Greyhounds improved to 5-1 in games Sprinkle starts, and ensured their fourth GLVC series win with the victory.
GAME TWO: UIndy 12, UWP 1 (7 inn.)A nine-run fifth inning sparked a lopsided Greyhound win in the series finale, enacting a 10-run rule to end the game after seven innings.
The Greyhounds had just one hit and were held scoreless through four innings, but the wheels fell off for the visiting Rangers in the fifth as UIndy scored nine runs on five hits and three UWP errors. Twelve batters came to the plate for the Greyhounds, with all but one starter reaching base safely in the frame.
Lee, Thomas, Hawk and Ritchie each recorded RBIs during the inning, led by Hawk's two-run double with the bases loaded.
UIndy starter
Connor Mailloux (3-4) surrendered a run in the sixth, but the Hounds piled on three more in the bottom half to push the lead to double figures. McCracken, Andrade and Ritchie each recorded RBI singles to make it 12-1.
Mailloux picked up the winning decision, throwing 3.2 innings while allowing three hits and a run. Seniors Witt and Collins each made appearances on the mound in their final home game at Greyhound Park.
Asalon went 2-for-3 with two runs, and Ritchie was 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs.
UIndy finishes the regular season with a four-game road series at Lewis next weekend. First pitch in Romeoville, Ill., Saturday is at 1 p.m. ET.
