Eagles sweep Greyhounds in final match of UIndy Tournament

INDIANAPOLIS – A tough UIndy Tournament came to a close Saturday evening with the hosts falling 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-17) to the Ashland Eagles in the final match.

UIndy (2-7) went 0-4 across the ultra-competitive tournament, which was won by No. 3 Minnesota Duluth (4-0).

The visiting Eagles took an early match lead with a 25-20 victory in set one. UIndy led by as many as four points early on, but Ashland, led by Alli Cudworth's five kills, eventually overcame the Hounds.

Set two also came down to the wire, this time UIndy having to bounce back from an early deficit, but Ashland eked out the 25-22 victory to put the Hounds on the ropes. Again Cudworth led the Ashland charge with six kills, and junior Becca Lira paced the Greyhounds with four.

Ashland controlled much of set three, and held off the Hounds down the stretch to take the match in a sweep.

Junior Shelby Ruffner led the UIndy offense with 10 kills, hitting .333 (10-4-18), followed by Lira's nine kills. Junior setter Natalie Wichern recorded 26 assists.

Freshman Bri Heffernan finished with 10 digs, and was named to the All-Tournament Team has the top libero. The New Castle, Ind., native led the entire field with 5.40 digs per set over the course of the tournament.

UIndy will begin Great Lakes Valley Conference action Friday, hosting Maryville at 7:00 p.m. in Ruth Lilly Fitness Center.

NOTES
- Ashland holds a 20-7 all-time series edge over the Greyhounds, dating back to the sqauds' first meeting in 1984.
- Bri Heffernan has led or co-led the team in digs seven of nine matches this season.
