Greyhounds, Saints end in scorless draw

THE DETAILS
Final: UIndy 0 – Maryville 0 (2OT)
Records: UIndy, 1-2-2 (0-1-2 GLVC) || Maryville, 2-3-1 (0-2-1 GLVC)
Location: Maryville Field – St. Louis, Mo.

ST. LOUIS – For the fifth consecutive match to open the year, the University of Indianapolis men's soccer team outshot their opponent at one end and suffocated them at the other. But for the third consecutive contest, the Greyhounds were held off the scoresheet, settling for a 0-0 draw with Maryville on Friday night in GLVC action.

GAME CHANGER
Bad luck struck the Greyhounds early, as forward Jacob Meyer was denied on a pair of quality scoring chances in the opening 15 minutes. His header in the eighth minute was denied by Saints goalkeeper Christian Kjaersgaard and his drive in the 15th minute rang off the crossbar.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
Meyer and Leo Cunningham both finished with three shots and one shot on goal each. Connor Cowan, David Kurz, Evan Smith, Benjamin Sierra and Casey Zimmerman also generated shots for the Greyhounds, who held a 13-6 edge on the shot clock. UIndy also held a 10-3 advantage on corner kicks.

In goal, Christopher Jones wasn't tested much, but was sharp when called upon. Jones stopped four shots on the night, two coming in the first overtime, to earn his third clean sheet of the year.

Kjaersgaard matched Jones with four saves at the other end to earn the shutout for the Saints.

HEAR IT FROM THE HOUNDS
Head coach John Higgins: "As far as our performance, our guys did everything we asked them to. Just like they've done for all five games this year. We controlled possession and they kind of sat back and made us come to them. It makes it easy to defend but we've got to put the ball in the back of the net. It felt like if we put one in the back of the net, we were going to break the game open."

"Right now, our guys are defending well and not giving anything away. But when your opponents aren't taking any chances in the attack, it puts extra emphasis on how you execute on the offensive end. We told the guys after the game to keep their heads up and to just keep playing. If we stick to what has made us successful, the goals are going to come."

UP NEXT
UIndy finishes up a brief two-match road trip on Sunday afternoon when they face another GLVC foe in the Tritons of Missouri-St. Louis. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. EST.
