Â
ST. LOUIS – Facing a 1-0 deficit when the second half began, the University of Indianapolis men's soccer team rallied to tie the game midway through the second half before earning a 2-1 overtime win over Missouri-St. Louis on Sunday.
Â
They Greyhounds notched their first win in GLVC play and are now 2-2-2 on the year.
Â
GAME CHANGERLess than two minutes into overtime, sophomore
David Kurz netted the golden goal on a free kick from 30 yards out. It was the first goal of the year for Kurz and second of his career, both of which have been game-winning tallies.
BEYOND THE BOX SCOREThe Greyhounds went without a shot on goal in the opening half, but got on the board with their first shot on net when
Josh Ling took a pass from
Jacob Meyer and chipped a shot over Triton keeper Jack Filla.
Â
UIndy held a 14-5 advantage on the shot clock, something they have done for each of their six matches this season.
Zak Mitiche finished with four shots on the day while Kurz and
Evan Smith each had two attempts.
Â
In goal,
Christopher Jones made a pair of key saves in the second half to pick up the win for the Hounds.
Â
Filla made a pair of saves for the Tritons, who got their lone goal of the game right before the end of the first half from Dom Barczewski.
Â
HEAR IT FROM THE HOUNDSHead coach John Higgins: "We changed our formation a bit and it paid off. We were able to create more quality chances and didn't give our opponents to sit back and pack it in. It also helped a little bit that we gave up that goal in the first half. Our guys really responded well to adversity and were able to find a way to put the ball in the net."
Â
"UMSL is a really good GLVC team. It was great to get the win but it was better to find out that we have a solution to the problems that we've faced early this season. It gives us confidence to know that we can make those adjustments and be able to get the results we want. I'm really proud of the way our guys battled today."
Â
UP NEXTThe Greyhounds will be back in action under the lights at Key Stadium on Friday, Sept. 25 when they welcome Truman State University to town. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
