INDIANAPOLIS – In a rematch of last year's GLVC Tournament championship, the University of Indianapolis men's soccer team rallied from down two goals in the second half to draw even and send Sunday's match with #13-ranked Quincy University to overtime. But the comeback would not come complete as Quincy netted the game winner early in overtime to come away with a 3-2 win.
GAME CHANGERThe golden goal came less than three minutes into overtime off the foot of Quincy's Taylor Reis, who ripped a shot with his right foot over the outstretched arms of UIndy goalkeeper
Christopher Jones and off the crossbar for his second goal of the match.
BEYOND THE BOX SCOREDown by a pair midway through the second half, the Greyhounds drew within a goal on a free kick from 45 yards out from
Callum Walsh that sailed past the defense and into the top left corner for his first career goal.
Less than seven minutes later, UIndy evened up the match when
Quinton Bridegroom's centering pass found the right foot of
Benjamin Sierra, who tapped the ball into a yawning cage for his second tally of the season.
Jones turned aside six shots for the Greyhounds, his best coming in the 80th minute when he got a fingertip on an in-tight chance from Eddie Plesha to keep the game tied.
Jordan Stephens opened the scoring late in the first half for the Hawks with an unassisted tally in the 40th minute. Reis added to the lead in the 53rd minute, ripping a shot past Jones for his first marker of the game.
Shots were 20-10 in favor of the Hounds. Nate Griffin turned aside seven Greyhound chances to earn the win.
COACH'S CORNERHead coach John Higgins: "We showed great character today and the guys did a great job to come back and draw even. It looked like we were going to make a push to win the game, but sometimes that's how the game goes. But we played well against a really good Quincy team. We've just got stay positive and get ready for a couple big ones next week."
"I still feel like it was a really positive weekend for us. We played two different formations and we generated quality chances from both. Unfortunately, you don't get wins from quality performances and we just have to keep at it and look to finish our chances in the next one."
