INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy men's soccer team opened the 2015 season on their home turf Thursday morning, dropping a 2-1 contest to the Senators of Davis & Elkins College.
Â
After falling behind less than three minutes into the game, the Hounds drew even in the 61st minute when junior
Jacob Meyer headed home a free kick from senior
Zak Mitiche to even up the match.
Â
But despite being outshot 19-5 in the match, the Senators would re-take the lead shortly after to escape Key Stadium with a one-goal win.
Â
GAME CHANGERThe Senators were outshot 12-2 in the second half and generated only one shot on goal over the final 45 minutes. But they made it count when Simon Hestad let a shot go from about 20 yards out that beat UIndy goalkeeper
Christopher Jones just inside the right post for the game-winner.
Â
BEYOND THE BOX SCOREMeyer led all Hounds with shots while
Evan Smith fired four shots on the day. Both players topped UIndy with a pair of shots on goal. Making his third career start in goal for the Hounds, Jones stopped a pair of shots on the day.
Â
Niklas Rasch-Hegelun tapped home an Oliver Bienias free kick to open the scoring in the third minute. Mads Kaiser was the only Senator to finish with multiple shots in the game. In goal, Daniel Hock turned aside five Greyhound shots to earn the win.

HEAR IT FROM THE HOUNDSHead coach John Higgins: "It's tough to find positives when you drop the first game of the season, but I thought we did some good things. We came out a little timid to start the game but after the first 10 minutes of the game until the end of the match, we played with the intensity that we need to play at."
Â
"We were really good on the ball today. We've got some guys that are able to hang on to it really well. Today, we just didn't generate the kind of chances we wanted to. "
Â
"You've got to keep your highs low and your lows high and this is one of those times. Our focus now is getting a team with 14 new guys on it to put this one behind them and come out ready to play on Saturday. The great thing about this game is that you always get a chance to rectify yourself and we'll be ready to go on Saturday."
