LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Indianapolis women's basketball dropped their final game of the weekend, falling to arch rival Bellarmine University, 70-50, inside Knights Hall on Saturday night.
Â
Senior
Princess German had 19 points to lead all scorers and
Nicole Anderson added 11 for the Greyhounds. But the Knights used a late first half run to take control of the game and carry that momentum over to the second half, dropping the Greyhounds to 6-15 on the year and 4-7 in GLVC play.
Â
Four Knights finished in double figures with Sarah Galvin's 14 points leading the way for Bellarmine, who improved to 15-2 on the year and 9-2 in conference play.
Â
"We did a lot of things well tonight but we struggled shooting the ball and it showed. We could never really get in a rhythm in the second half and at the other end, Bellarmine made us pay for it. What we have to do is hone in on the positive things we did tonight when we get back at it on Monday. It's deep in conference play so we don't have long to forget about this one before the next game gets here."
Â
The two longtime rivals came out firing on offense to open the game. UIndy started the game 5-for-8 from the floor but the Knights opened up 7-for-9 from the field and knocked down all three of their three-point attempts in the opening five minutes to take a 17-10 lead at the media timeout. The Hounds cut the lead to as little as five before finding themselves trailing 25-16 after one.
Â
Two straight layups from the Knights' Ally Mayhaus stretched the lead to double figures for the first time, but the Greyhounds would claw their way back into the game with a 10-3 run, capped by an
Ashley Montanez layup that made it 32-28 with 2:57 left in the half.
Â
It was as close as Uindy would get to the hosts before the halftime horn as Bellarmine answered with a 7-0 run of their own to close out the opening 20 minutes and take a 39-28 lead into the locker room. Three-point shooting played a major role in the Knights' taking a double-digit lead into the break. Bellarmine went 5-of-11 from deep in the first half while the Hounds misfired on all eight of their long distance attempts.
Â
Bellarmine stayed hot from the field to open the second half, opening up a big lead with a 10-1 run that spanned the first four minutes of the third quarter. The Kinghts went on to outscore the Greyhounds 17-8 in the quarter and take a 56-36 lead after 30 minutes.
Â
The UIndy offense continued to sputter in the fourth quarter as the Hounds went just 4-for-13 from the floor over the final 10 minutes as the Knights were able to close out the win.
Â
The Hounds shot 37.3 percent (19-for-51) from the floor overall and a paltry 15.4 percent (2-for-15) from long range. Bellarmine knocked down 47.5 percent (28-for-59) of their field goals, shooting 7-for-18 from long range on the night.
Â
The Knights controlled the game down in the post. Bellarmine outrebounded the Hounds 39-29 and held a 38-32 advantage in points in the paint. UIndy committed 18 turnovers that resulted in 21 Bellarmine points. The Knights had 16 giveaways that turned into just 10 points at the other end for the Greyhounds.
Â
The Greyhounds will have five days to regroup before they welcome the No. 16 ranked Quincy Hawks to Nicoson Hall on Thursday, Feb. 4. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
