Greyhounds drop overtime heart breaker to Hawks

INDIANAPOLIS – The Greyhound women's basketball team was unable to hold a lead late in regulation and their upset bid fell just short in a 73-72 overtime loss to No. 18 Quincy University on Thursday night inside Nicoson Hall.

Nicole Anderson led all scorers with 21 points while hauling down nine rebounds and handing out five assists for the Hounds. Princess German (14 pts) and Sarah Costello (11 pts) also finished in double figures and Ashley Montanez pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds for UIndy. But the Hounds came up just a point short of earning their first win over a ranked opponent in two years, falling to 6-16 on the year and 4-8 in GLVC play.

Anika Webster had 18 points off the bench for the Hawks and was one of four players to hit double-digits as Quincy moved to 19-2 overall, 10-2 in the league.

"We fought hard and we had our chances, unfortunately we came up a little bit short," Head coach Constantin Popa said after the game. "We made a couple mental mistakes and that's something you have to deal with when you have young players. I'm proud of the way we fought from behind in the second half, but we should have never been in that situation to begin with. Unfortunately, we came up short a little bit, it was a tough one."

The Hounds and Hawks exchanged five ties and three lead changes in the opening 10 minutes. With the Hounds leading 10-8 with 3:01 left in the first, the Hawks closed out the quarter on a 6-0 to take a 14-10 lead into the second quarter. Anderson had seven points and six rebounds in the opening 10 minutes for UIndy.

Quincy carried their momentum into the second quarter while the Greyhounds struggled on offense. A Costello three pointer with 6:47 left in the first half halted a 15-0 Hawk run and cut the lead to 23-13. The Hawks stretched their lead to as many as 15 points in the quarter, but the Greyhounds closed the gap with an 8-0 run over the final three minutes to trim the deficit to 28-21 at the break.

UIndy's front court played a vital role in getting the Greyhounds back within striking distance in the second half. Anderson, Montanez and Emily Thomas combined for the first 12 points of the second half to cut the lead to 36-33 with 6:38 left in the third. German put the Greyhounds in front shortly after with a pair of free throws and the Hounds stayed hot for the rest of the quarter to take a 46-41 lead after 30 minutes.

The Hawks re-took the lead with a 6-0 run to open the fourth quarter but UIndy ended the run with an Anderson layup, starting a 7-0 run that ended with another Costello triple that gave the Hounds their largest lead of the game at 53-47 with 4:16 to play.

A German layup with 1:11 to play made it 62-56 Greyhounds and the game appeared to be in hand. But the Hounds couldn't put the Hawks away and with time winding down and the Hounds up by three, Kara Gerbus buried a wide open three-pointer to tie the game with 16 seconds left. UIndy had a chance to win but German's three at the buzzer was just off the mark and the game went to overtime.

Quincy started the extra session with a 6-0 run but the Hounds responded with a three from Costello and a Montanez layup to cut the deficit to 69-68 with 2:53 to go. But three turnovers and one missed shot over the next two minutes cost the Hounds dearly and Maggie Cunningham put the game out of reach with a layup and two free throws down the stretch. Devin Ferguson beat the buzzer with a three-pointer but it was too little, too late for the Hounds.

The Hounds shot 46.2 percent (24-for-52) from the floor on the night, knocking down nine three-pointers and going 15-for-21 at the line. UIndy held the Hawks to 43.1 percent (28-for-65) shooting, including just a 26.3 percent (5-for-19) clip from long range for the third best three point shooting team in all of Division II.

Rebounds were 36-31 in favor of the Hounds. UIndy had trouble taking care of the basketball, committing 21 turnovers that resulted in 28 Quincy points at the other end.

The Hounds will look to rebound on Saturday afternoon when they welcome the Bulldogs of Truman State University to Nicoson Hall on Play 4 Kay Day. UIndy will be wearing their pink jerseys for the game in support of the battle against breast cancer awareness. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
