INDIANAPOLIS – Despite a career day from senior
Princess German, the University of Indianapolis women's basketball team dropped a 53-46 decision to Truman State University on Saturday afternoon on Play 4 Kay day inside Nicoson Hall.
Â
German finished with a new career high 32 points on 11-for-17 shooting, knocking down 6 of 9 three pointers and all four of her free throws on the day. But the rest of the UIndy offense went a combined 4-for-36 from the field as the Hounds dropped to 6-17 on the year and 4-9 in the GLVC.
Â
Courtney Strait led the way for the Bulldogs with 13 points and Kasey Gassensmith added 12 from Truman, who improved to 16-7 on the year and 10-3 in the league.
Â
"There's never any doubt about this team's fight, but we have to find a way to finish games," Head coach
Constantin Popa said. "You can't shoot 20 percent in the paint and expect to win. We had a lot of chances to put this one away and we couldn't do it. This team works extremely hard but we need to find a way to finish things off. We got a great performance from Princess, but there's a reason it's a team game. You can't hope to rely on one person to carry you in a game. Everyone needs to contribute and we didn't get that on the offensive end tonight."
Â
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 6-0 lead but the Hounds would storm back to grab a 10-8 advantage thanks to consecutive threes from
Nicole Anderson and German that made it a 10-8 game with 1:57 left in the opening quarter. Truman answered with six of the final nine points of the opening quarter to take a 14-13 lead after 10 minutes.
Â
After three scoreless minutes to open the second, the Hounds jumped back in front with a Costello triple. The teams would exchange the lead two more times before the end of the first half before heading into the break tied at 21 in a game where the defenses dictated play.
Â
The Bulldogs shot just 32 percent (8-for-25) in the opening half while the Hounds shot 33.3 percent (8-for-24) from the field.
Â
Truman opened up the second half with the first five points but UIndy answered with an 8-1 run to take a 29-27 lead when German finished off her second consecutive three-point play at the 5:36 mark. German added another three-point play to close out the third quarter, giving the Hounds a 34-31 lead heading into the fourth.
Â
Following five straight Bulldog points to open the fourth, German put the Greyhounds back in front with the rarely seen four-point play that made it 40-37 with 7:24 to play. But the Greyhound offense went ice cold over the next seven minutes, allowing the Bulldogs to rattle off a 10-0 run that put them up seven with less than a minute to go. German knocked down a pair of threes in the last minute, but it was too little, too late for the Hounds.
Â
The Hounds finished with a season low 28.3 percent (15-for-53) shooting, connecting on 8 of 17 three pointers and all eight free throw attempts against the top scoring defense in the GLVC. The Greyhounds' defense held the Bulldogs in check, limiting Truman to 35.6 percent (16-for-45) shooting, 6-for-12 from deep and 15-for-22 from the charity stripe.
Â
Rebounds were 33-29 in favor of the Bulldogs. Anderson grabbed nine to lead the Hounds and
Devin Ferguson set a new career high with seven boards for the Hounds. Truman also held a 17-14 edge in the turnover battle.
Â
The Hounds begin a four-game road trip next Thursday night, traveling to Kansas City, Mo. for a showdown with Rockhurst University. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. eastern time.
