Late run sinks Greyhounds in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The University of Indianapolis women's basketball team opened up a four-game road trip with their one and only matchup of the year against the Rockhurst Hawks on Thursday night.

For the third consecutive game, the Hounds held a lead late in the ball game with a chance to put away the win. However, the Hounds were unable to come away with a win, falling 70-68 to drop to 6-18 on the year and 4-10 in the GLVC.

Princess German had a game-high 25 points and Nicole Anderson chipped in with 18 points and a career-high eight assists for the Greyhounds, who dropped their fourth straight game.

Rockhurst got 19 points from Lauren Meyers, 17 from Marisa Lowe and 15 from Mary Dineen to improve to 13-9 on the year and 6-8 in the league. Rockhurst also snapped a seven-game losing streak to the Greyhounds.

The two teams exchanged a pair of leads in the opening three minutes before UIndy grabbed a lead they would hold for the majority of the game following a Devin Ferguson free throw and an Anderson layup that made it 11-7 Hounds. The Hawks would get a long ball from Jillian Meyers to tie the game at 13 late in the first, a score that would hold when the first quarter buzzer sounded.

UIndy came out firing when the second quarter got started, rattling off a 10-0 run over the first 2:30 of the second quarter to grab their first double-figure lead of the game. The Hounds kept a multiple possession lead for the next few minutes before an 8-2 Rockhurst run trimmed the lead to 30-28 with 3:19 left in the half. UIndy would eventually take a 37-35 lead into the break.

Rockhurst brought the game back to even at 40 thanks to a Lowe three at the 7:34 mark in the third quarter. But the UIndy defense refused to concede the lead as the defense limited Rockhurst to just one basket for the rest of the quarter and take a 50-43 lead into the final frame.

The Greyhounds got their lead back to double-digits thanks to a pair of German free throws that made it 56-46 with 8:08 to play. Rockhurst answered with an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to a pair with just less than six minutes to play, but the Hounds held the Hawks off and held a 68-60 lead with 2:05 left after a German triple.

It was the last time the Hounds would score as Rockhurst closed out the game with a 10-0 run, knocking down one three pointer and making the Hounds pay for some careless defense by going 7-for-8 from the line down the stretch. At the other end, the Hounds went 0-for-3 from the floor and committed two costly turnovers against the Rockhurst press that turned into points at the other end.

The Hounds shot 53.1 percent (26-for-49) from the floor on the night and connected on 7 of 17 three point attempts. But the Hounds struggled from the line, shooting just 56.3 percent (9-for-16) from the charity stripe on the night.

Rockhurst connected on 46.2 percent (24-for-52) of their tries, hitting 13 of 27 three point attempts and nine of 11 free throw attempts. Rebounds were 27-26 in favor of Rockhurst with Anderson's six board leading the way for UIndy.

Both teams did a good job taking care of the ball as the Hawks committed 11 turnovers to just 10 for UIndy. The Greyhounds dominated the game down low, outscoring the Hawks 36-12 in the paint.

Next up for the Hounds is a trip to Liberty, Mo. on Saturday for a meeting with the Cardinals of William Jewell College. Tip-off from the Mabee Center is set for 2:00 p.m. eastern time.
