Hounds dig in on defense in closing minutes, hold off William Jewell

LIBERTY, Mo. – The Greyhound women's basketball team had to hold off another fourth quarter comeback attempt on Saturday afternoon against William Jewell. Unlike the previous three games, the Greyhounds were able to hang on for a critical 56-54 victory over the Cardinals at the Mabee Center.

Sophomore Sarah Costello set a new career high with 21 points with 19 coming in the first half alone. Princess German added 17 and Nicole Anderson just missed on a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds for UIndy, who moved to 7-18 on the year and 5-10 in GLVC play.

Blair Klostermann led the Cardinals with 15 points and Maddie Nelson added 13 as William Jewell fell to 10-16 on the year and 5-10 in the league.

"After a tough loss to Rockhurst, we needed this one," Head coach Constantin Popa said. "It was the same type of game today and it's nice to be on the right side of the decision. We were aggressive on the defensive end late and forced them to take a few shots they didn't want. Overall, I thought we played really well for 40 minutes. We kept our intensity up for the entire game and we made good decisions throughout the game. I give our kids all the credit for this one. They've battled every game all season long and it's easy to lose focus throughout the year. They decided the outcome today."

The Greyhounds grabbed the lead on their first possession of the game thanks to an Ashley Montanez layup and stretched the lead out to 12-5 when Nicole Anderson finished off a three-point play with a little more than four minutes to go. Costello and German knocked down one three each to give the Hounds an 18-10 lead after one.

William Jewell opened the second quarter with six straight points to climb back to within a possession but the Greyhounds ended the small run with a Costello three that made it a 21-16 game with 7:12 to go in the frame. The Greyhounds stretched their lead to double figures at 31-21 with an 8-0 that spanned nearly four minutes.

The Hounds would get just one more field goal the rest of the quarter, Costello's fourth three of the half, and took a 34-28 lead into the break. UIndy had success shooting the ball in the opening half, connecting on 12 of 21 field goal attempts, going 6-for-10 from long range.

UIndy's offense stalled when the second half began and that allowed the Cardinals to go on a 10-3 run that gave William Jewell their first lead of the game at 38-37 midway through the third. UIndy's defense would buckle down for the remainder of the quarter, allowing just one Maddie Nelson free throw to find the net. German had the final four points of the quarter for the Hounds as UIndy took a 41-39 lead into the final period.

The teams exchanged buckets to open the fourth, but UIndy got a little bit of breathing room when German knocked down a big three pointer that made it 50-43 with 6:44 to go. Back-to-back buckets from Anderson made it a seven point game again at 56-49 with 2:14 to play.

But just like two nights ago, the Greyhound offense went cold over the final two minutes, allowing the Cardinals a chance to get back into the game. Nelson cut the lead to five with a minute to play following a jumper and after a Greyhound turnover on the next possession, Zinka Duric knocked down a three with 47 second to go to make it a 56-54 game.

Following a Costello miss on the Hounds' next possession, the Cardinals had a chance to complete the comeback in the final seconds, but Chris Keys missed with a three pointer that would have given the Cardinals a win at the buzzer.

UIndy shot 47.7 percent (21-for-44) from the floor, 42.1 percent (8-for-19) from deep and just 50 percent (6-for-12) from the line. The Hounds' defense limited William Jewell to just 33.9 percent (19-for-56) shooting, 37.5 percent (6-for-16) from deep and 66.7 percent (10-for-15) from the charity stripe.

Both teams pulled down 31 rebounds while William Jewell held a 16-9 edge in the turnover battle.

UIndy continues their current four-game road trip on Thursday, Feb. 18 when they travel to Romeoville, Ill. for a rematch with No. 8 Lewis. Tip-off is set for 6:15 p.m. eastern time.
