Upset bid falls short as Knights squeak past Greyhounds

INDIANAPOLIS – The Greyhound women's soccer team faced off with their first national-ranked opponent of the year on Friday night, taking on the 25th-ranked Bellarmine Knights at Key Stadium. UIndy turned in a quality effort for 90 minutes, but came up just short in their bid for the upset, dropping a 1-0 decision to the Knights.

GAME CHANGER
The game's only goal came right before the end of the first half. Bellarmine's Erika Lewis brought the ball down the right side and lobbed a cross that went right into the box when Spencer Grim was able to get a touch on the ball and slide it just over the goal line for her first tally of the year.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
The Greyhounds played the national-ranked Knights even the entire match. Shots were 10-9 in favor of Bellarmine and 4-3 in the shots on goal department. Freshman Amanda Meyer had all three shots of goal for UIndy as they traded chances with the Knights all night long.

Crenshaw turned aside three shots against, making a pair of saves in the first half and stopping the only shot she faced in the final 45 minutes. At the other end, Hannah Poteet also stopped three shots to earn the clean sheet for the Knights.

UIndy's best scoring chance came with a little more than 10 minutes to play. Elizabeth Behrends burst down the right side of the field with the ball and put a cross in to Meyer, who ripped a shot on goal from 25 yards out that Poteet made a leaping stop on to deflect the ball over the crossbar.

For the third time this year, Mother Nature had a say in when the Hounds would play. The start of the game was delayed by 45 minutes due to lightning in the area and was stopped for the same reason with 30 minutes to play.

COACHES' CORNER
Head coach Holly Cox: "Obviously we're disappointed with the result but I was really pleased with the way we played tonight against a quality opponent. The ladies worked extremely hard and were organized and composed on the ball. These games are the ones where you feel like you deserve something but that's not always what happens. We can take so many positives from tonight's performance and carry them over to Sunday's battle."

UP NEXT
The Hounds aim to close out the weekend on a high note when they take on the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles on Sunday afternoon. Kickoff from Key Stadium is set for noon.
