Â
INDIANAPOLIS – The Greyhound women's soccer team returned to action in front of their home fans on Friday night when they battled the Tritons of Missouri-St. Louis at Key Stadium.
Â
UIndy used a late first half goal and a stout defensive effort in the second half to down the second place team in the GLVC, 1-0, snapping a four-game winless skid.
Â
GAME CHANGER
UIndy was held off the shot clock for the first 40 minutes of the game, but the Hounds were finally able to get off an attack attempt, they made it count, scoring the game's lone goal.
Â
Stephanie Burdsall got the game-winner when she got a loose ball just outside the 18-yard box and let a sky-high shot go with her left foot. The ball appeared to be going well wide of the net, but curled just inside the far post for her sixth goal of the season.
Â
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The Greyhound defense was stifling over the final 45 minutes, allowing just two Triton shots on goal. UIndy kept UMSL's without a shot on goal from the start of the second half until there were 14 minutes left in the match when
Emma Crenshaw stopped a curling shot from the Tritons' Kayla Delgado.
Â
-The Tritons' best chance to tie the game came in the 58
th minute when McKayla Harder gathered in a crossing feed in close, but hit the crossbar with a rocket shot, keeping the Greyhounds up by a goal.
Â
-Just before Harder's chance, the Greyhounds had an opportunity to go up by a pair when
Kacey Wells found herself one-on-one with UMSL keeper Emily Rish in the 55
th minute. Wells hammered one on goal with her right foot that was destined for the bottom right corner until Rish dove and got a hand on the attack attempt.
Â
-Final shot attempts were 17-5 in favor of the Tritons with UMSL holding a 6-0 edge in shots on goal. Crenshaw turned aside all six shots faced to pick up her fourth clean sheet of the year.
Â
-Friday night marked the second straight year that the Greyhounds' youngest member, TeamIMPACT's Rory Halbert, made a start alongside the Hounds. Just like they did on "Rory's Night" last year, the Greyhounds came away with a 1-0 victory.

HEAR IT FROM THE HOUNDS
Midfielder
Michele Govern: "Our organization tonight was great. We kept our defensive shape intact the entire night and stuck with the game plan. It was something we worked on all week and we were able to go out and execute and get a much-needed win."
Â
Head Coach
Holly Cox: "We knew going into this game we were going up against a really good attacking team and we needed to be precise with our organization all over the field and we did just that. We kept our shape and limited their chances."
Â
"The difference between tonight and some of our recent games is we capitalized on our chances. We had been creating chances in some of the last few games and tonight we executed. It should give us confidence going forward as we look to get another win on Sunday."
Â
UP NEXT
The Greyhounds will look to make it a perfect homestand when they take on the Maryville Saints on Sunday afternoon at Key Stadium. Kickoff is set for noon.
