QUINCY, Ill. – The UIndy football team (2-5, 1-3 GLVC) endured a turnover-plagued 33-20 loss at Quincy University Saturday night. The host Hawks (5-2, 3-2) converted three touchdowns off of four UIndy fumbles on the way to their first win versus the Greyhounds in five tries.
Â
The turning point came early in the fourth quarter with the Hounds trailing 21-13. UIndy took over with 13:26 left and drove all the way to the Quincy one-yard line, but on the door step of a potentially game-tying score, a bad QB-running back exchange resulted in UIndy's fourth lost fumble of the game.
Â
The Hawks recovered at their own two-yard line and proceeded to run off 14 plays and 98 yards while eating up nearly half the quarter. The marathon drive featured 11 running plays before a four-yard touchdown pass to junior tight end Owen Schoenenberger made it a two-score game with just three-and-a half minutes to go. Running backs Chris Harris and Jaylan Jones combined for 80 rushing yards on the drive. As a team, Quincy finished with 273 yards on the ground, with 200 coming in the second half.
Stepping in for the injured
Jake Purichia, UIndy quarterback
Bryce Stancombe threw for nearly 400 yards in his first collegiate start. The redshirt-freshman went 22-for-42 for 396 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions. Wideouts
Tuwan Payton, (182),
Garrett Willis (106) and
Malik Higgins (102) all surpassed triple digits in receiving yards, marking the first time three Hounds had at least 100 receiving yards since 2003.
Â
Payton added 90 kickoff return yards to finish with 272 all-purpose yards. Four of his six catches went for 29 yards or more, including a 66-yard touchdown reception in the opening quarter.
Â
A trio of UIndy defenders had at least 10 tackles, as
Aeneas White (11),
Derrick Bryant (10) and
Rob Dury (10) paced the team. Meanwhile, junior linebacker
Aaron Bruning garnered his first career interception in the first quarter.
Â
The Greyhounds return home to Key Stadium next weekend, site of three of their final four games. The stretch run begins versus the visiting Lincoln Blue Tigers Oct. 22 in a 6 p.m. kick.
Â
Â
Notes: The Greyhounds are now 4-1 all-time versus Quincy … the Hawks returned a first-quarter UIndy fumble 62 yards for the first score of the day … Dury is now just six tackles shy of entering the UIndy career top 10 … the last time three Greyhounds had 100 or more yards receiving came Oct. 25, 2003 when Cesare Manning (131), Travis Zike (130) and Rob Mager (113) all hit triple digits … Stancombe's total of 396 passing yards is the seventh-highest total by a Greyhound QB since game-by-game records became available in 1983.
