Volleyball's six-match win streak snapped at Truman

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – UIndy volleyball saw its six-match winning streak come to an abrupt end Friday night, suffering a straight-set defeat (25-15, 25-15, 25-22) at Truman State University inside Pershing Arena.

The Greyhounds – who had won nine of their last 12 – fell to 12-11 overall and 7-5 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, as the Bulldogs improved to 11-14 (7-5) in the inter-divisional victory.

UIndy's six-match win streak was built partially on solid defense at the net, but on Friday the Hounds had just four blocks as a team – the fewest since a 3-0 loss against Lewis (Oct. 1) – and surrendered a .245 attack percentage overall to Truman. The Bulldogs committed only 10 errors on 110 swings.

Truman quickly changed a tight opening set into a lopsided one, using a 13-3 run to turn a 5-5 draw into an 18-8 lead. The 'Dogs went on to claim the set by a 10-point margin while hitting .289 (13-2-38) as a team. Truman also racked up 23 digs during the set.

The Bulldogs again raced past the Hounds in the second stanza, reeling off a lengthy 14-6 run to claim the set and put UIndy on the ropes, up 2-0. Truman followed its efficient offensive effort in the opening set with a .290 (12-3-31) attack percentage in the second, getting five kills from Kayla Bastian.

The third frame began in a similar fashion to the first two: a tightly disputed set that featured five ties early on. But again the 'Dogs created separation midway through, increasing their lead to 19-13 before UIndy head man Jason Reed needed a timeout. The Hounds continued to fight, however, getting within two points at 22-20 following a block by senior Shelby Ruffner and junior Kacee Salyers.

Truman wound up winning a 25-22 decision, though, sealing the sweep against the Crimson and Grey and marking Reed's first loss to the 'Dogs.

It wasn't only the UIndy defense that struggled Friday, as the Hounds hit just .071 (33-24-125), the third-lowest percentage of the season. Salyers led all Greyhounds with nine kills, followed by sophomore Katie Voelz's eight.

Sophomore setters Remi Bowman (17 assists) and Maggie Gibson (15) each had double-figure assists, and Gibson led the team with 18 digs, good for her fifth double-double. Classmate Kate Bontrager finished with 16 digs from the libero position.

UIndy will look to bounce back Saturday at Quincy, with the first serve from Pepsi Arena scheduled for 4 p.m. ET.
