INDIANAPOLIS – In the 2016 season finale, the UIndy football team (6-5, 5-3) ensured their seven straight winning season with a 21-16 victory against in-state Saint Joseph's College at Key Stadium Saturday evening. Prior to kickoff, the Greyhounds honored their 10 seniors before their final collegiate contest.
Â
Alex Bobos,
Derrick Bryant,
Russell Collins,
Sam Daggy,
Rob Dury,
Chad Eppley,
Zach Hiss,
Hayden Janney,
Korey Rogan and
Tommy Taylor all donned the Crimson & Grey for the final time Saturday. The group helped the Hounds to three GLVC championships, two NCAA playoff appearances and a 35-11 (.761) overall record over the last four seasons.
Â
Up 11 in the fourth quarter, the Hounds came up with a pair of big defensive stops down the stretch, including stuffing a rush attempt on 4th & 1 on the UIndy 30-yard line. The Pumas (5-6, 3-5) finally scored the lone touchdown of the fourth quarter to make it a five-point game with 14 seconds left. They would fail on both the two-point conversion and the attempted onside kick recovery, however, as UIndy extended its win streak versus St. Joseph's to 17.
Â
All told, the Pumas (5-6, 3-5) managed only 75 rushing yards while converting just 6 of 17 third-down snaps. Junior linebacker
Aaron Bruning led all defenders with 12 total tackles, while junior safety
Aeneas White garnered his first interception of the year on a ball tipped by teammate
Robert Williams.
Â
Senior linebackers
Derrick Bryant (11) and
Rob Dury (9) combined for 20 tackles. Dury, meanwhile, bumped his career total to 392, good for sixth in the UIndy all-time annals.
Â
Junior running back
Andrew Walker led the way offensively with a season-high 160 rushing yards on 27 carries, including a 59-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Redshirt-freshman QB
Bryce Stancombe threw a pair of touchdown passes – a 39 yarder to
Malik Higgins in the second quarter and a 3-yard dart to
Alex Kimack in the third.
