Dominant fourth quarter performance propels Greyhounds to win over St. Edward's

SAN JUAN, P.R. – Backed by a dominant fourth quarter performance, the University of Indianapolis women's basketball team got back in the win column on Friday afternoon, downing St. Edward's University, 55-39 in their first of two games at the Puerto Rico College Sports Tours Division II Thanksgiving Tournament.

Sydney Brackemyre had a game-high 17 points for the Greyhounds (4-1), spearheading a UIndy offense that outscored the Hilltoppers (2-5) 22-9 in the final quarter to pull away for the win.

The Greyhound defense was rock solid all day long, holding St. Edward's offense to just 28 percent (14-for-50) shooting, the second time this season the Greyhounds have held an opponent under 30 percent from the floor. The 39 points conceded were the fewest by a Greyhound team since Jan. 24, 2013, an 81-39 win over McKendree.

UIndy took control of the game with an early 8-0 run and held the Hilltoppers to just two field goals in the opening 10 minutes to seize a 10-5 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Claire Carlton connected on a three-pointer with 6:14 left in the second quarter to give the Greyhounds their biggest lead of the day at 18-11, but the Hilltoppers responded with an 8-2 run to cut the lead to 20-19 with just over a minute left in the half. UIndy ended the half with back-to-back buckets from Sarah Costello and Martha Burse, the latter coming on a layup right before the halftime buzzer that made it 24-19 Hounds at the break.

Buckets were tough to come by in the opening 20 minutes for both teams. UIndy shot just 30 percent (9-for-30) from the floor, going 1-for-10 from long distance. At the other end, St. Edward's connected on 21.2 percent (7-for-33) of their field goals, knocking down 3-of-14 triples.

The Greyhound offense struggled out of the halftime break, missing their first six shots and committing six turnovers during a 6-0 HIlltopper run that ended with a Nicole Anderson free throw that tied the game at 25 with 3:37 to play in the third.

Down by a pair late in the quarter, UIndy took the lead for good after buckets on three consecutive possessions. After 30 minutes, the Hounds held a 33-30 lead.

A 10-2 run to open the fourth quarter gave the Hounds their first double-figure lead of the day at 43-32 after a Brackemyre layup with 5:42 to go in the game. The Hounds closed out the game on a 9-1 run, holding St. Edward's to just seven field goal attempts in the final 10 minutes, forcing six turnovers down the stretch.

UIndy controlled the rebounding battle all day long, holding a 44-30 advantage when the final horn sounded. Nicole Anderson led all players with 11 rebounds, coming just one point shy of her second double-double of the season. Brackemyre and Burse finished with six boards each as nine of the 10 Greyhounds to step foot on the floor Friday recorded at least one rebound.

The Greyhounds will be back on the hardwood on Saturday, wrapping up their Caribbean trip with a showdown against #19-ranked Grand Valley State. Tipoff from San Juan is set for approximately 1:00 p.m. eastern time.
