Hounds fall just short of upsetting No. 19 Grand Valley State in Puerto Rico finale

SAN JUAN, P.R. – Playing in their first and only back-to-back contests of the year on Saturday, the University of Indianapolis women's basketball team got their second look at a nationally-ranked opponent this year with a showdown against No. 19-ranked Grand Valley State.

The Greyhounds (4-2) threw everything they had at last year's NCAA Division II Midwest Region champion, holding a high-powered Laker attack to just 37 percent (17-for-46) shooting on the day. But 18 Greyhound turnovers proved costly as Grand Valley (5-1) was able to hold on for a 53-47 win.

For the fourth time this year, Sydney Brackemyre led the way for the Greyhounds with 20 points, her third 20-point effort of the year. Sarah Costello added 15 points for the Greyhounds, who will come back home with a split in Puerto Rico.

The UIndy offense struggled out of the gate, recording just one field goal in the opening 6:57 as the Lakers jumped out to a 9-2 lead. But the Greyhounds closed out the opening quarter with a 7-2 run to keep the game from getting out of reach, cutting the GVSU lead to 11-9 after 10 minutes.

A bucket from Costello and two Brackemyre free throws to open the second quarter gave the Hounds their first lead of the day with eight minutes left in the half. But the offense would struggle the rest of the first half, managing just one field goal the rest of the half and headed into the break trailing, 21-16.

UIndy came out firing from long range to open the second half, knocking down four straight threes to re-take the lead at 28-25 with 4:46 to go in the third. Grand Valley responded with seven straight points, eventually holding a slim 36-35 lead after 30 minutes of play.

The back-and-forth battle went back in the Greyhounds' favor when Brackemyre opened the fourth quarter with a three and a free throw to make it 39-36 UIndy with a little less than eight minutes to go.

But the Greyhound offense dried up down the stretch, connecting on just one field goal over the next seven minutes while the Lakers went on a 13-3 run. UIndy cut the Laker lead to four two times in the final minute, but would come no closer before the final horn sounded.

Bailey Carinduff had 19 points and Janae Langs finished with 11 for the Lakers, who finished well below their season average of 77 points per game. The Lakers shot 4-for-12 from long range and 15-for-26 on the afternoon.

Brackemyre and Devin Ferguson tied for the UIndy lead with seven rebounds each as UIndy held a 37-31 advantage on the glass. Grand Valley held a 20-8 advantage on points in the paint, as well as an 18-11 edge in points off turnovers.

The Greyhounds will return to the states and get ready for their Great Lakes Valley Conference opener against Wisconsin-Parkside, set for this coming Thursday (Dec. 1) night. Tipoff from Somers, Wis. is set for 6:30 p.m.
