SOMERS, Wis. – The Greyhound women's basketball team turned in an impressive showing in their GLVC opener, picking up a 70-57 win over Wisconsin-Parkside on Thursday night.
Â
Sydney Brackemyre was dominant in her GLVC debut, pouring in a season-high 29 points and grabbing 11 board for her third double-double of the year. The Wilmington, Ohio-native was 11-for-18 from the floor on the night and 5-for-6 from long range, both season bests for the junior forward.
Â
UIndy shook off a slow start to move to 5-2 on the year, dropping the Rangers to 0-6 on the year in the process.
Â
"It's a road game and we opened a little sluggish but credit to our kids because they figured out how to get back on track," Head coach
Kristin Drabyn said. "At the end of the day, we're 1-0 in conference and we showed we can win on the road in a tough environment."
Â
Sarah Costello put the Hounds up on the first possession of the game, but the Rangers struck back with a 7-0 run over the next 2:11. UIndy eventually tied the game at 9-9, but Parkside re-took the lead with an 11-2 run that made it 20-11 with one minute to go in the first.
Â
The Greyhound offense came alive right before the end of the first quarter and UIndy  spent the next 8:54 erasing the deficit, going on a 17-2 run to take a 28-22 lead with 2:25 to play in the first half. A 7-0 Ranger run put them back in front late in the half, but Brackemyre sent the Greyhounds into the locker room with a 31-29 lead after knocking down a three at the buzzer.
Â
Brackemyre accounted for 13 of the Hounds' 15 second quarter points, knocking down three of her five triples in the second.
Â
UIndy wasted no time taking control of the game, opening the second half on a 15-2 run that spanned the first 4:55 of the third quarter, stretching the lead to 46-31. Parkside trimmed the deficit to as little as eight early in the fourth quarter, but a late 10-2 run put the game out of reach.
Â
Nicole Anderson finished with 15 points, going 3-for-7 from the floor and 9-for-9 from the free throw line. UIndy connected on 41.1 percent (23-for-56) of their field goal attempts while going 7-for-14 from long range and 17-for-23 from the line. The UIndy defense turned in another stellar effort, holding the Rangers to 31.1 percent (19-for-61) from the floor and 32 percent (8-for-25) from deep.
Â
The Hounds held a 44-36 advantage on the glass, the third straight game UIndy has won the rebounding battle. The 12 UIndy turnovers committed were also a season-low.
Â
UIndy will get another shot at a nationally-ranked opponent in their next contest when they travel to Romeoville, Ill. to take on the #18-ranked Lewis Flyers.
Â
"We know we have to be ready to go come Saturday," Drabyn added. "Lewis is going to be another great challenge for our kids as we continue to grow and mature as a team. They're a really well-coached team and it's going to be a challenge for our kids. But we welcome the challenge of playing another ranked team and it all starts with getting better tomorrow."
Â
Tip-off from Neil Carey Arena is set for 2:00 p.m. eastern time.
