ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Offensive struggles plagued the University of Indianapolis women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon in the Greyhounds' 61-43 loss to the No. 18-ranked Lewis Flyers.
Â
The Greyhounds shot a season-low 29.1 percent (16-for-55) from the floor, connecting on just 3-of-17 three point attempts.
Martha Burse was the lone Greyhound in double-figures, pouring in 16 points as UIndy (5-3, 1-1 GLVC) suffered their eighth straight defeat to Lewis (8-1, 2-0 GLVC).
Â
The teams traded the lead a pair of times early in the first quarter with UIndy taking an 8-6 lead at the 5:26 mark after back-to-back threes from
Devin Ferguson. However, the UIndy offense was held without a point for the rest of the quarter while Lewis closed out the frame with 11 straight points to take a 17-8 lead after 10 minutes.
Â
UIndy's next field goal wouldn't come until the 4:36 mark of the second quarter when
Nicole Anderson connected on a jumper. Lewis would stretch their lead to as many as 17 before the end of the half and took a 31-17 lead into the intermission.
Â
When the second half began, the Greyhound offense had finally come alive, opening the second half with a 15-4 run that trimmed the Lewis lead to 35-32 with less than five minutes to go in the third quarter.
Â
But just as the Hounds cut the deficit to a single possession, they struggled to find the basket the rest of the quarter, going 2-for-10 from the floor as Lewis stretched their lead back to double-figures as the third quarter came to an end. The fourth quarter produced more of the same as Lewis held the Hounds to just two field goals over the final 10 minutes of play. Â
Â
Jamie Johnson and Rachel Hinders had 14 points each, tying for the Lewis team lead. The Flyers connected on 47.9 percent (23-for-48) of their field goals but going just 2-for-10 from long range and 13-for-20 from the free throw line. The Flyers controlled the game down low, outscoring the Greyhounds in the paint, 34-20.
Â
Rebounds were 40-29 in favor of the Flyers.
Nicole Anderson and
Ashley Montanez tied for tops on the Greyhounds with six boards each.
Â
The Greyhounds will have a week off to recoup before taking on Cedarville University next Saturday (Dec. 10) in the final game of their current seven-game road trip. The Hounds and Yellow Jackets will tip off from the Callan Athletic Center at 3:00 p.m.
