INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy swimming and diving teams had a successful completion to its four-team, two-day dual meet Saturday, defeating Bellarmine, Lewis and McKendree in convincing fashion.
Â
The Greyhounds started the day by recognizing its eight senior student-athletes. Friends, family and fans were on hand to support
Bucky Coonradt,
Megan Giambastini,
Sarah Hamilton, Romano Hoffman,
Agnieszka Malecka,
Torie Pena,
Shelby Sexton,
Marijn van Zundert and
Bartosz Zarzecki.
Â
"I am very happy for our seniors," said head coach
Jason Hite. "I'm especially appreciative of their leadership, something we'll need the rest of the way to help get us to where we want to be at the end of the year."
Â
Saturday's action was a continuation on Friday's events. Twenty more races were contended, with UIndy winning 18 events, including five by seniors.
Â
The Greyhounds won all four relays – the mens' and women's 400 medley and the men's and women's 200 free. They capped the meet with the UIndy men going 1-2 in the 200 free relay, with the A-team finishing in 1:24.237 and the B-squad out-touching third-place McKendree by nine hundredths with a 1:27.04.
Â
Malecka took individual wins in the 100 and 400 IM, and Zarzecki won the 100 breast. He paired with Coonradt in the 400 medley relay victory, while the latter also helping in the 200 free relay triumph.
Â
Other swimming standouts included
Sotia Neophytou, who contributed to both relay wins and also taking the 100 fly;
Rodrigo Codo Berti was on the winning 200 free relay team and finished first in both the 100 fly and 100 IM; and
Ante Lucev won the 100 back before anchoring the 200 free relay.
Â
In addition, a pair of Greyhound divers,
Payton Staman and
Josh Zylstra, punched their tickets to the NCAA DII Championships with lofty scores on the 3-meter board.
Â
As dominant as the Greyhounds were, the weekend's format did more than bring dual wins for the the home teams. Saturday morning's quick turnaround offered all the competitors a taste what they will face in the multi-day championship meets coming up in the spring semester.
Â
"It allowed us to see how we would perform in a mini version of the GLVC and National Championships," Hite noted. Â
Â
The second-year head man will no doubt enjoy the success of the weekend, but he knows there is more work to come for his Greyhound squads.
Â
"I'm pleased with our performances overall," Hite said. "We're moving in the right direction as a team, but we have a few things to clean up over the next two weeks before House of Champions, where we'll be trying to qualify for Nationals. I'm confident we will have some incredible performances on both teams. We're going to be resting and get ready for House of Champs. It'll be good."Â
Â
The aforementioned House of Champions meet will take place at the IU Natatorium in downtown Indy Friday through Sunday, Nov. 18-20. Last season, the Greyhounds posted a number of NCAA B-cuts and school records at the annual meet, with the men winning their meet and the women placing third.
