Falcons sweep double header, take opening series of the year from Greyhounds

INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Indianapolis baseball team wrapped up their opening weekend on Saturday with a pair of nine-inning contests against the Falcons of Notre Dame College (Ohio).

After taking the season opener on Friday, the Hounds couldn't pull out a win in either game on Sunday, falling 3-2 and 13-8, respectively.

Senior Anthony Asalon collected five hits for the Greyhounds and Kyle Orloff drove in four runs in game two to give him 10 during the three-game series. UIndy dropped to 1-2 on the year while the Falcons head back to Ohio 2-1 overall.

GAME ONE: Notre Dame 3 – Uindy 2

Following three scoreless innings to open the game, the Falcons jumped on the board with a pair of runs off UIndy starter Jake Shaw in the top half of the fourth. Travis Smetana opened the scoring with a one out RBI single and Nick Ely added a two out base hit to stretch the lead to 2-0.

One day after plating 20 runs, the Greyhound bats would lay dormant until the bottom of the sixth inning when Asalon led off with a single and scored one batter later on Colin Hawk's RBI double. One inning later, the Greyhounds got back to even when Dylan Jones brought home LaWan Rollins with a sacrifice fly.

But the Falcons got the eventual winning run in the eighth, taking advantage of a wild throw on a sacrifice bunt attempt that advanced a runner to third and allowed him to score on a sac fly later in the inning.

UIndy was able to load the bases with two outs in their half of the eighth, but came up empty as Blake Richardson grounded back to the pitcher to end the inning. The Hounds got a Brendan Dudas single in the ninth, but left him stranded at first to end the game.

Shaw (0-1) scattered 12 hits and gave up a pair of earned runs in eight innings of work, walking one and recording seven punch outs.

GAME TWO: Notre Dame 13 – UIndy 2

After a scoreless first inning, the Greyhounds took their first lead of the day in the second when Kyle Orloff singled home Storm Joop. Orloff would come in to score two batters later when Asalon launched his first home run of the year over the left field fence to make it 3-0 Hounds.

Notre Dame cut the deficit down to one with a pair of runs in the top of the third, but Orloff put the Hounds back in front with an RBI groundout that scored Joop and made it a 4-2 game.

But the lead wouldn't last as the Falcons surged ahead with six runs on five hits in their half of the fourth to take an 8-4 advantage. UIndy would manage just one hit over the next three innings while the Falcons tacked on four runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh to make it a 13-4 game.

UIndy got an RBI single from Orloff in the seventh, along with a two run double from Bryce Aldridge that cut the lead to six. Orloff added his fourth RBI of the game in the 8th after getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, capping the scoring.

Connor Mailloux (0-1) was tagged with the loss after giving up five runs (three earned) on eight hits with one walk and one strikeout in three-plus innings of work. The Falcons took advantage of six Greyhound errors in game two, plating six unearned runs off mistakes.

Next up for the Hounds is a trip to Oakland City, Ind. for a three game set against Oakland City University on Feb. 26-28. First pitch for Friday's opener is set for 3:00 p.m. eastern time.
