Greyhounds tame Yellow Jackets, open crossover play with win

WESTFIELD, Ind. – The University of Indianapolis baseball team opened the inaugural Midwest Region Crossover Baseball Showcase in impressive fashion, besting Cedarville University (3-7), 11-1, in seven innings at Grand Park.

Four different Greyhounds had multiple hits with Macy Holdsworth's three hits leading all UIndy players. Holdsworth, Devon Hensley, Storm Joop and Joe Trennepohl drove in a pair of runs each as UIndy moved to 12-3 on the year and picked up their 11th win in their last 12 games.

On the mound, Matthew Kaplanis tossed another gem for the Greyhounds, improving to 5-0 on the year after scattering 10 hits, walking one and striking out eight batters.

Following a scoreless two-and-a-half innings to open the game, the Greyhound bats broke the game wide open in their half of the third. Colin Hawk opened the scoring with a one out RBI double that plated Anthony Asalon from third and he would score later in the inning on Joop's RBI single that made it 2-0.

Trennepohl followed up with a two-run double down the line before scoring two batter later on a double from Holdsworth. When the smoke cleared, the Greyhounds held a 5-0 lead heading to the fourth.

After Kaplanis held the Yellow Jackets scoreless in the fourth, the Greyhounds added a pair of insurance runs in their half of the inning with a sac fly from Kyle Orloff and Joop's second RBI single of the day to stretch the lead to 7-0.

Kaplanis kept the Yellow Jackets scoreless for 6 2/3 innings before a two-out RBI single got Cedarville on the board in the top of the seventh. The senior hurler would bounce back on the very next batter, stranding the bases loaded with his eighth and final strikeout of the day.

The Greyhound offense closed things out in the bottom of the inning, starting with another RBI double from Holdsworth. Hensley followed up with a two-run double down the left field line to make it 10-1 and scored on a wild pitch later in the inning to end the game.

UIndy tagged Cedarville starter Connor Hamilton for 11 earned runs on 16 hits, drawing one walk and striking out three times.

The Midwest Region Crossover Baseball Showcase continues on Saturday. UIndy will be in action on diamond five for a pair of games, starting at 10:30 a.m. against Alderson Broaddus and wrapping up against Grand Valley State immediately following game one.
