VANDALIA, Ill. – Backed by home runs from a trio of seniors, the No. 19-ranked Greyhound baseball team erased an early deficit on their way to a 10-5 win over Maryville University on Wednesday afternoon.
Â
Anthony Asalon,
Alex Ritchie and
Brady Thomas all went deep and
Colin Hawk had a team-high three hits for the Greyhounds (22-9), who took the lead for good with a five-run fifth inning to send the Saints (13-19) to their third straight defeat.
Â
Maryville jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but UIndy answered in the top of the next inning, getting an RBI fielder's choice from
Devon Hensley that brought
Storm Joop home.
Â
Louis Niemerg put the Saints back on top with a solo home run in the fourth off Greyhound starter
Adam Cornwell, but the Hounds wasted no time battling back to take the lead, this time for good.
Â
Asalon and Ritchie drew walks to start the inning, followed by a single from Hawk that loaded the bases with no outs for the heart of the order.
Kyle Orloff knotted things up with an RBI single to left and two batters later, Thomas launched a grand slam over the left field wall that made it 6-2 Greyhounds.
Â
Three bases loaded walks in the bottom of the fifth brought the tying run to the dish for Maryville, but UIndy reliever
Jeff Lavin was able wiggle out of the jam and keep the Hounds up by four.
Â
Ritchie added to the UIndy lead in the sixth, cracking belting his third home run of the year that made it 8-2 Greyhounds.
Â
Maryville plated three runs in the seventh to cut the lead in half, but once again the Hounds responded in the top of the following inning.
Â
With one gone in the top of the eighth, Asalon stepped to the plate and crushed a solo shot, giving him a team leading seven long balls on the year. Later in the inning, Joop added an insurance run with an RBI single, capping the scoring and putting the Greyhounds in double digit runs scored for the 10
th time on the year.
James Frascella (2-0) earned the win for the second straight game, tossing 2/3 of an inning in relief of starter
Adam Cornwell, who worked 3 2/3 innings on the afternoon.
 Â
The Hounds are back out on the road this weekend, heading to Somers, Wis. for a four game set against GLVC East Division for Wisconsin-Parkside, starting with a double header on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. eastern time.
