Greyhounds open up weekend with a pair of emphatic wins over UW-Parkside

SOMERS, Wis. – The No. 19-ranked Greyhound baseball team ran their winning streak to four games on Saturday, sweeping Wisconsin-Parkside in a pair of GLVC East Division games. The Hounds cruised to an 11-4 win in the opener and followed it up with a convincing 11-1 win in game two.

Colin Hawk had three hits and drove in four runs on the day to lead the UIndy offense while Anthony Asalon and Brady Thomas had three hits and scored three times each. With the sweep, the Greyhounds move to 24-9 on the year and 10-4 in the GLVC.

GAME ONE: UIndy 11 – UW-Parkside 4

A patient approach at the plate paid dividends for the Hounds early in game one. The Greyhounds drew five walks in their first trip to the dish to go along with four base knocks. Hawk got the Hounds on the board with an RBI double just 10 pitches in, the first of two RBI hits for the senior first baseman in the inning.

Joe Trennepohl and Devon Hensley chipped in with RBIs in the first and three Greyhounds scored either on wild pitches or errors, spotting UIndy to a comfortable 8-0 lead after half an inning.

The runs kept on coming for the Hounds in the second as UIndy plated two more runs to extend their lead to double digits. Carter Pranger capped the scoring for the Hounds in game one with an RBI single in the fourth that made it 11-0.

It proved to be more than enough for starter Matthew Kaplanis, as the senior hurler scattered six hits, walked two and fanned a career-best 10 hitters over six innings of work to move to a perfect 8-0 on the year. At one point, Kaplanis recorded seven consecutive outs via the strikeout and stranded all seven runners he allowed to reach base.

GAME TWO: UIndy 11 – UW-Parkside 1

The Rangers grabbed their first lead of the day in the bottom of the second, taking advantage of a pair of UIndy errors to generate an unearned run. Their lead was short lived, as Hawk put the Hounds in front with a two-run double in the top of the third. The Hounds added one more in the frame when Alex Ritchie came in to score on a wild pitch.

UIndy put another three spot on the board in the fourth, getting RBIs from Trevor Forde and Ritchie, and scoring another on a wild pitch to stretch the lead to 6-1.

The onslaught continued in the top of the sixth, with five more UIndy runs coming in to score. Devon Hensley scored on a wild pitch to make it 7-1 with nobody out in the inning. Orloff brought home the next run with an RBI double and was followed by three consecutive run scoring singles from Thomas, Trennepohl and Forde to stretch the lead to double digits.

Junior Jake Shaw (4-3) was brilliant on the hill for the Greyhounds, giving up one unearned run on three hits with one walk and three strikeouts in six innings of work. Scott Mitchell fanned the side in the seventh to close out the game.

The two teams will wrap up their weekend series with another double header on Sunday afternoon in Somers. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. eastern time.
