Hounds earn sweep on MDA Day

INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 1-ranked UIndy softball team had a special day at Baumgartner Field Sunday. Not only did the Greyhounds sweep a doubleheader against the visiting Bellarmine Knights, 2-0 & 9-3, but they also celebrated a year-long fundraising effort for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

As the guest of honor on MDA Day, the Greyhounds hosted Liam Ealy and his family at the ballpark. At an early age, Liam, the nephew of Greyhound softball alum Megan Slightom, was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy.

After Liam threw out the first pitch Sunday, the Head Coach Melissa Frost and the Hounds presented the Ealy family with a check for $8,017.15 for the MDA and this important research.

In additio, both UIndy and Bellarmine wore special jerseys (pictured below) showing a united front for "Team Liam" and the MDA.

The day started with quite the pitchers' duel between two of the GLVC's best. UIndy's Morgan Foley bested Bellarmine ace Ally Foster with a two-hit shutout to down the Knights, 2-0. Foley (25-0) finished with nine strikeouts in the complete-game effort, walking three while giving up just a single and a double in seven innings.

The Greyhound bats were quiet through the first five frames until four hits and a sac bunt in the sixth accounted for the game's only runs. Sophomore Jessie Noone started the rally with a leadoff single and was bunted over by senior Jenny Thompson. Emma Varsbergs, Natalie Lalich and Brooke Riess followed with consecutive hits – a single, double and a single, respectively – with Varsbergs and Riess earning RBIs.

Senior Erika Goodwin added a double and a walk, while Riess was credited with a stolen base.

GAME 2
The Undy bats heated up in the capper, as the home team scored in five of its six turns at the plate. Riess led the way with three knocks, including her sixth home run of the season with a two-run shot in the sixth.

After UIndy hung two runs in the first, the Knights (21-21, 10-8) took their first lead of the day on a three-run homer from Foster in the third. The lead of short-lived, however, as the Hounds tied it in the bottom of the third then amassed six runs combined in the next three innings to cruise to the win.

Lalich and Tayler Weck each had two hits in game two, with each recording an RBI double. Katie Kelly scored twice and had a pair of singles, with Goodwin and Noone also adding two hits.

In the circle, Foley (26-0) collected another "W" with 4 1/3 innings of relief work. With the Hounds down 3-2 and two runners in scoring position in the third, the Louisville, Ky., native relived starter Miranda Tamayo and delivered a big strikeout to end the threat. She went on to finish with six Ks in the capper while surrendering just one hit.

The Greyhounds made a change to their upcoming midweek schedule. UIndy will now host non-conference Urbana on Thursday, April 7 at 3:30 p.m. ET.
