Volleyball swept 3-0 in GLVC opener at UMSL

ST. LOUIS, Mo.  – The UIndy volleyball team dropped their third match in a row Friday, falling 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-17) in their Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) opener at Missouri-St. Louis.

The Greyhounds (2-7, 0-1 GLVC) got off to a strong start in the opening set, leading 5-1, before the hosts climbed back and drew even at 14 apiece. With the set tied 18-18, UMSL ( 6-2, 1-0) reeled off a 7-2 run to grab an early 1-0 edge. Junior Kacee Salyers had four kills on eight swings in the set.

UIndy jumped out to another early lead in set two, gaining a 7-2 advantage before UMSL called a timeout. The Tritons continued to claw back, and eventually took the lead late in the set at 22-21. Despite another Greyhound rally, the Tritons went on to win the set, 25-23, taking a 2-0 match lead.

The Tritons led for the entirety of the third set, using a 9-2 run midway through the frame to put the Greyhounds on the ropes. They went on a win the set, 25-17, completing their first victory over UIndy since 2008, and second in 17 matches since 2000.

Freshman Anna Fehribach led the team with 10 kills, followed by nine from Salyers. Sophomore setter Remi Bowman facilitated the Greyhound attack with 26 assists, adding seven digs and three kills.

Senior Becca Lira paced UIndy with nine digs, and classmate Shelby Ruffner led the squad with four blocks.

The Hounds look to bounce back with a match Saturday at 5 p.m. ET against the Maryville Saints.
