Volleyball defeats Maryville in five sets as Salyers sets career-high in kills

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Junior Kacee Salyers racked up a career-high 22 kills, and the UIndy volleyball team overcame a 2-1 deficit to defeat the Maryville Saints, 3-2 (25-12, 20-25, 22-25, 25-18, 15-13), for their first Great Lakes Valley Conference victory of the season.

Salyers, an outside hitter from Stoutsville, Ohio, hit .357 (22-7-42), adding six digs and a block in an all-around performance. Sophomore setter Remi Bowman posted a career-best 55 assists, and freshman Anna Fehribach (12 kills) and senior Becca Lira (10) chipped in double-figure kills.

The first set belonged to the Greyhounds (3-7, 1-1 GLVC), winning 25-12 as their hosts hit a meager -.071 with nine attack errors. UIndy countered with a highly-efficient .474 (10-1-19), led by three kills apiece from Lira and Salyers.

Maryville bounced back, however, taking the second set 25-20 after not allowing UIndy to take a lead at any point. The Saints reversed their inept attacking in the first set with a .353 percentage in the second, getting five kills on seven swings from Zoe Zeiter.

The Saints put pressure on the Hounds in the crucial third set, winning 25-22 after continuing their strong attack (.640). Maryville led by as many as eight points, 21-13, before a short Greyhound rally forced a MU timeout at 22-18. The Hounds' comeback bid was denied, however, as a kill from Katie Verseman sealed the win on set point.

UIndy responded with a big 25-18 win in set four, hitting .481 (16-3-27) as Salyers totaled six of her 22 kills. Sophomore Katie Voelz killed all four of her attempts, as well, and Bowman had 13 assists.

The Hounds parlayed that win in set four to a superb start in the decisive fifth frame, jumping out to a 7-3 lead over the Saints. Maryville responded, and pulled within a point at 10-9 on a block. The two sides continued to trade points until, with the match tied 13-13, the Hounds got consecutive kills from Salyers and Bowman.

"It was a great battle tonight," fourth-year head man Jason Reed said. Reed has never lost to Maryville during his tenure. "Emotion played a big role in tonight's win. We set the tone in the first set, and again toward the end of the third, fourth and fifth sets."

He continued: "It was really encouraging to see our girls compete in this atmosphere. We're learning to do that on a consistent basis, and as that continues the wins will follow."

Once the Greyhounds took an early 2-1 lead in set four, they never trailed again the remainder of the match. UIndy also finished with a season-best .308 attack percentage, finishing with more kills, assists, digs and service aces than its opponent.

Since the 3-0 win over Saginaw Valley back on Sept. 9, Salyers is hitting .259 and averaging 4.00 kills per set. During that stretch she has led all Greyhounds with 84.0 points, 25.0 more than the next-closest individual.

"Kacee had a really nice match for us today," Reed said. "She kept an aggressive mindset and took a lot of great swings. She has put together a few nice weeks, and it's great to see her coming into her own."

Junior Kailey Kleinert saw her first action of the season, finishing with three kills and three block assists. Fellow middle Voelz had six kills and three blocks, and libero Bri Heffernan led the team with 17 digs.

Fehribach notched another double-double with 12 kills and 14 digs, and Lira finished with five aces and two blocks to go with her 10 kills.

Bowman turned in a complete performance at the setter position, finishing with nine digs, four blocks and three kills to complement her 55 assists.

UIndy returns home next weekend, hosting Missouri S&T Friday, Sept. 23, at 7 p.m. ET and Drury Saturday at 3 p.m.
