Greyhounds sweep Miners in GLVC showdown, 3-0

INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy volleyball team swept past the visiting Missouri S&T Miners Friday night, 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 31-29), in the Ruth Lilly Center.

Improving to 4-7 overall and 2-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, the Greyhounds commanded the action around the net, racking up 12 team blocks while hitting a solid .220. Missouri S&T dropped to 3-8 (0-3 GLVC) for the season.

As expected, the match was closely contested shortly after first serve. Despite their early struggles, the Greyhounds – sparked by sophomore Katie Voelz – closed the set strong to take a 1-0 lead. Voelz accounted for four of UIndy's final seven points, tallying three kills and block.

In the second, Voelz and fellow middle Shelby Ruffner continued to fuel the Hounds' offense and defense, combining for eight kills, three blocks and a stout .727 attack percentage. UIndy hit a match-high .438 (16-2-32) as a team throughout the set, maintaining a narrow margin throughout to win, 25-22, gaining a 2-0 match edge.

"Ruffner and Voelz did a great job tonight of setting the tone in the middle of the net," Head Coach Jason Reed commented, following the win. "They controlled both sides with their hitting and their blocking, and that made a big difference in opening things up for Anna Fehribach later on."

Fehribach was a major factor in the marathon third set, recording eight of her team-leading 13 kills in the final stanza. It appeared the Hounds were cruising toward a match sweep, leading by as many as 22-16 and on the verge of victory. Missouri S&T responded, however, reeling off a 9-2 run to take a 25-24 lead.

From there, the two sides traded points and momentum. UIndy responded to the 25-24 deficit with a clutch Kacee Salyers kill, and subsequent kills from Fehribach and Becca Lira kept the Hounds a step ahead of the Miners. Finally, up 30-29, Salyers and Ruffner combined to block Caroline Dykes, elating the Greyhound bench and spectators and capping the second UIndy sweep of the season.

The final set held 10 ties and four lead changes, bringing the match totals to 18 and eight, respectively.

"I thought our outsides were a bit tentative at times," Reed noted. "But they both came up big at the end of the third set with crucial kills and blocks."

Fehribach finished with a career-best 13 kills, hitting .265 (13-4-34) while totaling her third double-double with 10 digs. Fellow outside Salyers recorded nine kills, 13 digs and four block assists.

"This was a really important win for us," Reed said. "We have had a couple of really good weeks of practice, and it was nice to see our girls compete, especially when it got tight at the end of the match."

Voelz finished with nine kills and five blocks, hitting .421 (9-1-19). Ruffner led the squad with seven blocks, adding six kills on an error-free .500 (6-0-12) percentage.

Sophomore setter Remi Bowman helped the Hounds hit a solid. 220, distributing 37 assists while chipping in six digs, four block assists and a pair of kills. Classmate Bri Heffernan, making her second appearance at the libero position, co-led UIndy with 13 digs.

Senior Becca Lira had several timely kills, finishing with seven total to go to with two blocks. Sophomore Maggie Gibson had seven digs and a clutch kill late in the third set.

UIndy returns to action Saturday, hosting Drury at 3 p.m. ET in the Ruth Lilly Center.
