INDIANAPOLIS – Despite a furious rally in the match's later stages, the UIndy volleyball team fell 3-1 (25-18, 25-23, 20-25, 25-23) to Drury Saturday afternoon in the Ruth Lilly Center.
After falling behind by two sets, the Greyhounds (4-8, 2-2 GLVC) rode a wave of momentum to claim the third set over the visiting Panthers (9-4, 3-1). The Hounds hit .364 (15-3-33) as a team during the set, and were led by sophomore
Katie Voelz and
Remi Bowman, who totaled five kills and 14 assists, respectively.
There were six ties and a pair of lead changes in the third, but a late 6-1 run from the Hounds helped force a fourth set. Senior
Becca Lira accounted for two kills and a block assist during that run, pairing with junior
Kailey Kleinert on set-point to reject Bentley Mara's attack.
UIndy rolled that momentum into the fourth, where it led by as many as four points at 17-13. Drury responded with a 6-2 spurt to tie the set a force a Greyhound timeout. The two sides were neck and neck down the stretch, but, with the Hounds up 23-21, the Panthers reeled off four straight to end the match.
Voelz and junior
Kacee Salyers co-led the Hounds with 13 kills each, and Salyers tallied her second double-double in as many matches with 10 digs. Voelz hit .407 (13-2-27) to raise her team-leading season percentage to .315.
Freshman
Anna Fehribach notched her fourth double-double, finishing with 11 kills and 11 digs. Lira followed close behind offensively with nine kills, adding three digs and two blocks.
Bowman accumulated 43 assists, five digs and four kills, and sophomore libero
Bri Heffernan led the team with 12 digs.
One night after posting a season-best 12 blocks as a team, the Hounds managed just four against the Panthers. Drury hit .234 overall, and had three individuals record double-digit kills.
The win is Drury's first-ever inside the Ruth Lilly Center, and also marked the first time the Panthers have defeated the Greyhounds twice in a row. Drury defeated UIndy 3-0 last season in Springfield, Mo.
UIndy is back in action next weekend, hosting GLVC East Division foes Wisconsin-Parkside and Lewis. The Hounds meet the Rangers Friday, Sept. 30, at 7 p.m. ET, before facing the nationally-ranked Flyers Saturday, Oct. 1, at 3 p.m.
