INDIANAPOLIS – Despite a handful pitfalls throughout the match, the UIndy volleyball team emerged with a spirited 3-2 (25-23, 22-25, 14-25, 25-22, 15-11) victory Friday night against the visiting Wisconsin-Parkside Rangers.
The Greyhounds (5-8, 3-2 GLVC) snapped the Rangers' (4-10, 3-2) three-match win streak in resilient fashion, rallying from a 2-1 deficit after a subpar third set to claim sets four and five. When the dust settled in the Ruth Lilly Center, there were 33 ties and 11 lead changes between the two GLVC sides.
UIndy won a tight opening frame on the strength of a match-high .441 (17-2-34) attack percentage, led by sophomore
Katie Voelz's five kills on seven swings. With the set tied at 23 apiece, freshman
Anna Fehribach delivered a kill and service ace on consecutive plays to seal the 1-0 match lead.
Set two was much of the same, and held 17 ties and seven lead swaps as the teams were neck-and-neck. The visiting Rangers eventually tied the match, winning 25-22 as Lexi Turek accumulated seven of her match-high 21 kills.
Following the 10-minute break, Parkside put its foot down in a lopsided 25-14 decision in set three. The Rangers hit .429 (14-2-28) compared to the Hounds' minus-.042 (5-6-24), and UIndy garnered many of its points on six Parkside service errors.
The turning point in the match came in the fourth set, where an undaunted Greyhound side rallied to a 25-22 win behind a mix of stingy defense and efficient offense. Five separate Hounds contributed at least one block during the stanza, and sophomore
Maggie Gibson delivered 11 assists and helped UIndy hit .297 (16-5-37) from the setter position.
"We really started to click in the fourth set, and realized the way we played in the third is not going to happen again. That can't happen again, that's not 'UIndy volleyball,'" Gibson said. It was her first time playing in her native setter position this season.
"[Head Coach
Jason Reed] just needs me to compete for every position, and so that's what I've been doing in practice," she said. "I need to be ready to go in whenever, and I've set my whole life so it felt good."
"Maggie came off the bench with a spark and really changed the momentum," Reed added.
One final test presented itself in the decisive fifth set, as the Rangers sprinted out to a 5-0 lead to put the Hounds immediately on the ropes. UIndy coolly reeled off an 8-1 run – including a stretch of three consecutive blocks – to take control of the set as the teams switched sides. The Hounds never relinquished their lead, as the Rangers' 13th service error of the night ended the affair at 15-11.
"We really took care of business, and we didn't make any silly errors," Gibson noted, speaking about the final two sets. "Our energy was consistent throughout the whole fourth and fifth sets. We were proud to be out there, and we were happy to be out there. We were having fun."
Reed also commented on the come-from-behind win, saying, "We showed phenomenal fight in the fourth and fifth sets. We've been talking about defensive focus and taking pride in who we are as a program. I feel like in those last two sets we saw what we can be as a team."
Voelz led the Greyhounds with 15 kills while tying a season-high seven blocks defensively. Senior
Becca Lira racked up 13 kills on a .333 (13-4-27) attack percentage, adding 10 digs and three blocks.
Fehribach and junior
Kacee Salyers each totaled 12 kills, and Fehribach added eight digs. Salyers chipped in nine digs and a season-best five blocks.
Setters
Remi Bowman (30) and Gibson (20) combined for most of the Hounds' 55 team assists, and Gibson tallied her first double-double of the season with 10 digs. Sophomore libero
Bri Heffernan led the Hounds with 11 digs.
The Greyhounds return to the court tomorrow (Saturday) to host the 15th-ranked Lewis Flyers at 3 p.m. ET. Â
