GOLDEN, Colo. – The UIndy volleyball team bounced back Friday evening after suffering a season-opening loss just hours before, defeating Edinboro 3-1 (23-25, 25-19, 25-13, 25-20) for the first win of the 2016 campaign.
Competing in their second match of the Oredigger Classic, hosted by Colorado Mines, the Greyhounds (1-1) put together three strong sets in a row to take care of the Fighting Scots (0-2) in the programs' first meeting since 1985.
The win wasn't unblemished, however, as the Fighting Scots took a narrow opening set, 25-23. Inconsistent play and untimely mistakes doomed the Greyhounds, who still nearly overcame a late deficit to pull within one point at 24-23.
Much as it had in the season opener, UIndy shook it off in the second with a 25-19 win, drawing the match level at one set apiece. The Hounds held Edinboro to a minus-.194 (5-11-31) attack percentage during the set.
In the third, the Fighting Scots appeared to making their own rebound, leading 8-5 early on. The Hounds flipped a switch, however, reeling off an 8-2 run to force a timeout from the opposition. That run became part of a larger 20-5 stretch as UIndy buried Edinboro, 25-13, and took a 2-1 match edge.
That momentum carried into the fourth and final frame, where the Greyhounds controlled mostly from start to finish, winning 25-20 to seal the first victory of the year.
When asked about the turn of events after the opening set, Head Coach
Jason Reed said, "The first set was like our first match earlier in the day; we played not to lose instead of playing to win. In the remaining three sets I think we did a much better job of playing our game."
Sophomore middle
Katie Voelz capped a strong opening day with 11 kills and no errors on 22 attempts (.500), adding two block assists and two service aces. She hit a combined .429 across UIndy's two matches Friday, committing only three attack errors while totaling 21 kills on 42 swings.
"
Katie Voelz was our go-to player all day today," Reed noted. "I thought that she consistently played aggressive and it showed in the stats."

Becca Lira led the squad with 12 kills, adding 11 digs, and junior
Kacee Salyers had 11 kills and three aces. Sophomore

"The win is important for us, just to get that first one under our belt and take momentum into tomorrow's matches," said Reed. His squad takes on No. 6 Wayne State (Neb.) and Colorado Mesa tomorrow at 2 p.m. ET and 6:30 p.m., respectively, in their final two matches of the opening weekend.
