GOLDEN, Colo. – The UIndy volleyball team got off to a rocky start for the 2016 campaign, falling 3-1 (25-16, 20-25, 25-19, 25-17) to Cal State Los Angeles Friday afternoon in the Oredigger Classic, hosted by Colorado Mines.
It was just the second ever meeting between to Greyhounds (0-1) and Golden Eagles (1-0), and first since a neutral-site 3-2 win for UIndy back in 2004.
UIndy stumbled out of the gate, slipping into a 7-0 hole before getting on the board. Cal State L.A. went on to hit a sharp .387, making only two attacking errors, and took the set, 25-16.
The Hounds rebounded in the second frame, winning 25-20 after limiting the Golden Eagles' attack to just .111 hitting (11-7-36). Sophomore setter
Remi Bowman totaled 12 assists in the set, and senior outside
Becca Lira led the way with four kills.
The third and fourth sets somewhat mirrored the first, as Cal State L.A. won both without ever trailing. The Golden Eagles took a 2-1 match lead with a 25-19 victory in a hard-fought third set, before finishing the match in a 25-17 fourth-set win.
Cal State L.A. hit .429 in the closing set, finishing the match .286 overall with 50 kills. Lauren Gomez led the opposition with 16 kills and four errors on 34 swings (.353), as setter Kelsey Molnar finished with 36 assists and 17 digs.
All told, there were zero lead changes and just three ties in the match, and the Golden Eagles topped the Hounds in kills (50 to 46), digs (54 to 46) and blocks (8 to 1).
"We didn't start strong in any of the sets we lost," fourth-year Head Coach
Jason Reed said, following the season-opening defeat. "We didn't pass well, and we didn't serve well enough to get them out of system. Because they were in system so much our defense wasn't able to defend well at all."
For the Hounds, Lira finished with 18 kills, followed by
Katie Voelz who totaled 10 kills and a .350 (10-3-20) attack percentage. Bowman tallied 39 assists in her UIndy debut, adding 10 digs.
UIndy has one more match Friday, meeting Edinboro at 7:30 p.m. ET. The Fighting Scots lost their first match Friday, 3-0, to Nebraska Kearney.
"The next match will be a test of character to see what we're made of and if we'll bounce back," Reed noted.
The Greyhounds will wrap up the Oredigger Classic with matches against No. 6 Wayne State (2 p.m ET) and Colorado Mesa (6:30 p.m.) tomorrow.
