INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy volleyball team dropped a four-set contest to Southern Indiana on Saturday afternoon from Ruth Lilly Fitness Center. The loss sends the Greyhounds to 12-11 on the season and 7-4 in GLVC matches.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
UIndy held the visitors to .121 hitting in the first set, but the Greyhounds committed 12 attacking errors themselves in the loss. Five players had at least two kills, including
Rachel Irbe with four. UIndy led 22-19 late in the frame after
Teigan Flaws' second kill of the set, but the Screaming Eagles went on a 6-1 run to finish the opener with a win.
Â
The Greyhounds cleaned up their play for the second set, hitting .263 as a team, led by
Anna Fehribach (.455) and Flaws (.600). UIndy trailed 11-5 after a Southern Indiana 7-1 run early in the frame, but
Katie Furlong recorded back-to-back kills to keep the Greyhounds in it. The teams traded points for most of the set thereafter, but Fehribach capped a run to give the home team a lead at 23-22.
Julia Kruzan was timely with her lone kill of the set, as it gave the Greyhounds the 25-23 victory.
Â
The teams exchanged rallies for the first half of the third set, but the Greyhounds were unable to keep up after a 6-0 USI run to trail 15-10. A kill by Flaws put UIndy within three, but the teams went back and forth with points until Southern Indiana would win, 25-21.
Â
The Greyhounds had seven attacking errors in the fourth frame, and were unable to keep up with the Screaming Eagles, as they trailed the entirety of it. Southern Indiana gained the early advantage at 5-2 that would turn into a 17-10 deficit for the home team. UIndy attempted the comeback, fueled by solo blocks by
Kailey Kleinert and
Katie Voelz en route to a five-point run, but the deficit loomed too large for the Greyhounds as they lost the finale, 25-21.
