Hawks stifle 15th-ranked Greyhounds, spoil home opener in 6-5 victory

INDIANAPOLIS – The visiting Rockhurst Hawks used stifling defense and impressive ball control to spoil UIndy's home and season opener Friday afternoon, winning 6-5 at Key Stadium.

The 15th-ranked Greyhounds (0-1) scored the first two goals of the game inside the opening six minutes, but the Hawks (3-0) clamped down and rallied back to pick up the upset win.

Rockhurst dominated possession for much of the game, winning 11 of 13 faceoffs while recording 27 ground balls to UIndy's 18.

Sophomore Matthew Johnson and Parker Kump got the scoring underway less than five minutes into the game, netting two goals within 60 seconds to give the Hounds a 2-0 lead.

The Hawks responded with two goals of their own before the end of the first quarter, knotting the game at 2-2.

UIndy freshman Parker Johnson put the Hounds back on top with his first collegiate score midway through the second quarter, but Rockhurst answered with three goals before the end of the half to take command of the contest.

Early in the third, the Hawks' Chris Schveninger found the back of the net to make it 6-3, putting the Hounds against the wall.

UIndy continued to battle, however, getting goals from junior-transfer Sam Horning late in the third and another from Kump in the fourth quarter to pull within one goal.

The Hawks, who had given up only one goal in the fourth quarter in each of their previous two games this season, were put on the defensive as the Hounds attempted to erase the three-goal deficit.

UIndy nearly did just that, as Matthew Johnson had a game-tying opportunity right in front of the goal with a little more than two minutes on the clock. Rockhurst's Jamison Boggio made undoubtedly the best of his eight saves, denying Johnson from close range.

A late save from Jarod Kimble gave the Hounds the ball with under a minute left, but they couldn't get a shot on goal as the final horn approached.

Kump, last season's leader with 34 goals, finished with two in Friday's loss. Fellow sophomore Tyler Johnston led the Hounds with a pair of assists. Eric Lounds, Max Groves and Shawn Kimble also added helpers.

Jarod Kimble made 14 saves in the net for UIndy, recording a 70% save percentage.

UIndy returns to action next Sunday Feb. 26, hosting No. 20 Rollins at Key Stadium for a 12 p.m. ET start.
